In 2026 it falls on Sunday, 15 February. Devotees may mark the occasion with prayer, fasting, offerings to a Shiva linga, meditation and an overnight vigil; customs and timings vary by community and location.
What is Maha Shivratri?
Maha Shivratri is the annual observance dedicated to Shiva. It is distinct from the monthly Shivaratri observance: the Bengaluru Urban District Administration describes Maha Shivaratri as the yearly festival honoring Shiva and explains the difference between the two observances in its festival guide.
The name is commonly translated as “Great Night of Shiva.” The Bengaluru Urban district government also associates the festival with Shiva’s heavenly dance. Accounts of the festival’s meaning vary rather than pointing to one exclusive explanation.
When is Maha Shivratri in 2026?
Maha Shivratri follows the lunar calendar, so its Gregorian date changes each year. It is generally observed on the 14th day of Krishna Paksha, the waning phase of the moon, in the lunar month described as Phalguna by Maharashtra Tourism. North and South Indian calendar conventions name the lunar month differently, while observing the festival on the same day.

How is Maha Shivratri celebrated?
There is no single required way to observe the festival. Some people worship at home; others visit a temple. Common practices include prayer, chanting Shiva’s name or mantras, meditation, fasting, making offerings and staying awake through the night. Incredible India and Maharashtra Tourism describe these customs in their festival overviews: Incredible India and Maharashtra Tourism.

Fasting
Fasting practices range from strict fasts to partial fasts, and some people choose a lighter observance suited to their circumstances. Foods associated with fasting in Maharashtra Tourism’s account include fruit, sabudana khichdi, sabudana vada and rajgira laddoo. These are regional examples, not universal rules about what devotees may eat.

What stories are associated with the festival?
Several religious legends are connected with Maha Shivratri. They are traditions and interpretations, not independently verified historical accounts, and no single one is presented as the festival’s sole meaning.
- Shiva and Parvati: Some traditions connect the night with the union or marriage of Shiva and Parvati.
- Halahala poison: Another story recalls the churning of the cosmic ocean, when Shiva drank the Halahala poison to protect the worlds.
- The Tandava: The festival is also associated with Shiva’s cosmic dance, the Tandava; the Bengaluru Urban district government links the name Maha Shivaratri with Shiva’s heavenly dance.
How to find local puja and fasting times
Ritual periods, the local lunar tithi and guidance on breaking a fast depend on location. Drik Panchang’s 2026 Maha Shivaratri page for Pune is specific to Pune, Maharashtra; its timings should not be applied automatically elsewhere. For your observance, check a panchang for your location or ask your temple.
