“Will of the People” opens Muse’s ninth studio album and is its title track. The album was released on August 26, 2022; Apple Music lists it as a 10-song, 37-minute release, exclusively licensed to Warner Music UK Limited.
Sony Music Japan announced the track as the album’s third single on June 2, 2022. In a statement published by the label, frontman Matthew Bellamy described the song as a fictional story set on an invented planet in a metaverse, ruled by a dictatorship operated through an algorithm. Its protagonist wakes up and rejects that world. This is Bellamy’s explanation as presented by the label, not a definitive reading of the lyrics.
