Laal Singh Chaddha is most affecting when it makes the episodic shape of Forrest Gump speak to Indian history, friendship and belonging. Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor give the story warmth, but its close adherence to the original can leave the film feeling less creatively independent than its setting suggests.
What is Laal Singh Chaddha about?
Directed by Advait Chandan, this 2022 Hindi comedy-drama stars Aamir Khan as Laal and Kareena Kapoor as Rupa. It follows Laal through a series of personal and national turning points, linking his life to events around him while returning to the relationships that give his journey emotional weight. Rotten Tomatoes lists its runtime as 2 hours 39 minutes and its theatrical release date as 11 August 2022.
The film is an Indian adaptation of Forrest Gump, with a screenplay by Eric Roth and an Indian adaptation by Atul Kulkarni, according to Aamir Khan Productions. It is not simply a new story using the same premise: it retains recognizable elements of the earlier film while relocating its journey and historical backdrop.
How does it compare with Forrest Gump?
Robert Zemeckis’s Forrest Gump (1994), starring Tom Hanks, runs 142 minutes and is based on Winston Groom’s novel, according to Paramount Pictures. Both films follow a kind-hearted man through an episodic life that intersects with major events. Laal’s version keeps much of that narrative machinery, but its Indian setting gives the parallels a different emotional and political context.

BFI’s review sees those Indian details as more than cosmetic changes: the historical setting and the relationships around Laal help the adaptation make a case for unity. At the same time, BFI notes how closely the movie follows the earlier film’s screenplay beats and memorable motifs. That tension is central to the experience: the new context matters, even when the storytelling remains familiar.
Where the film finds its heart
Laal is largely an observer of political events rather than their driver. His decency, and the way other people respond to it, becomes the film’s route to hope. The friendship with Mohammed is especially effective because it turns the broad idea of unity into a personal relationship shaped by conflict and trust.

Aamir Khan’s performance aims for vulnerability and gentleness, qualities that help sustain the film through its many episodes. The reception is divided on how well the lead performance works: Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express criticized it, while Common Sense Media’s editors praised Laal’s vulnerability and the film’s reversal of gender roles. These are individual critical responses, not a settled verdict on how every viewer will read the character.
What holds it back?
A familiar path
The most persistent weakness is the film’s dependence on its template. If you know Forrest Gump, many of the parallels arrive as recognition rather than discovery. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus calls it “indebted to its source material to the point of creative poverty,” while also describing it as an amiable retelling. That captures both sides of the film: affection and accessibility, but less independence than its cultural relocation promises.

A life-story format can make transitions feel abrupt, and the long runtime gives each detour room to test the audience’s patience. Shubhra Gupta criticized the pacing; Ian Freer of Empire found the film a sometimes strange facsimile, though not without charms. The episodic structure is part of the adaptation’s design, but it does not make every stretch equally engaging.
Music and entertainment style
The soundtrack and popular-entertainment sensibility are among the film’s pleasures for some viewers. Randy Myers of the San Jose Mercury News praised the tunes. That reaction sits alongside less enthusiastic assessments of the film’s pacing and originality: its warmth and musical appeal may carry viewers through familiar material, but they do not erase the resemblance.

How was Laal Singh Chaddha received?
At access on 8 October 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 69% Tomatometer score from 36 critic reviews and a 90% Popcornmeter score from more than 100 verified audience ratings. Those figures are a dated snapshot of responses on one aggregator, not an objective measure or a permanent consensus. The contrast suggests a simple distinction in reception: critics were more divided about the adaptation’s creativity, while verified audience ratings were more favorable.
The film’s box-office figure should also be read with its source clearly attached. Box Office Mojo reports a worldwide gross of $12,093,536, comprising $3,401,324 in its “domestic” field and $8,692,212 internationally. These are Box Office Mojo’s listed figures; its domestic category should not be mistaken for a worldwide total.
