“The Hardest Thing,” which first aired January 30, 2025, comes close to being one of the strongest episodes of the Law & Order revival, thanks to a lively guest cast and a compelling showcase for Hugh Dancy as Nolan Price. The hour’s performances are stronger than its writing, however, leaving the episode effective but uneven.

What happens in “The Hardest Thing”
The episode opens with the killing of affluent Charles Harper, a crime initially treated as a burglary gone wrong. Detectives Shaw and Riley investigate who was greedy enough to want him dead, while Assistant District Attorney Nolan Price takes on a difficult case of his own. At the same time, Price is dealing with concern about his father’s failing health.
The two strands give the episode both a familiar procedural mystery and a more personal legal drama. That combination lets the investigation move forward while bringing Price back into focus.

How the performances and writing compare
CBR reviewer Brittany Frederick’s assessment is favorable but qualified: the episode comes close to the revival’s best, with a particularly strong guest cast and a welcome showcase for Dancy. The performances give the hour energy, but the script does not consistently make the most of them. As Frederick puts it, “the writing isn’t always on the same level as the actors.”
That distinction is the key to the review. The cast helps the story land, even when the writing feels less assured. This is one critic’s judgment, not a broad consensus: Rotten Tomatoes’ captured listing showed one critic review.
