Heading to Leavers WA? Talk with partners about consent, pack condoms and water-based lubricant, and use condoms correctly if you have sex. WA Health advises STI testing before and after Leavers; testing is especially important after unprotected sex. The official Leavers WA site lists the 2026 event for Monday 23 to Thursday 26 November.
What to pack for safer sex
- Condoms: WA Health recommends condoms and/or dams for vaginal, anal and oral sex. Pack enough for your plans, and check the packet instructions and expiry date.
- Water-based lubricant: WA Health’s 2025 Leavers reminder recommends using condoms consistently and correctly with water-based lubricant. Follow the condom’s instructions; oil-based products can damage latex condoms.
- A plan for testing: Make time to arrange an STI test before and after Leavers if appropriate. You can ask a GP or local sexual-health clinic about what testing suits you.
WA Health’s 2025 advice was framed as three steps: pack condoms, use them, and get tested. That release also reported condom distribution at Leavers in partnership with the Western Australian AIDS Council, but this was a 2025 detail; it does not confirm distribution at the 2026 event. Talk about consent before and during sex
WA Health encourages open conversations with partners about consent, pleasure and safer sex. Consent needs to be freely given and can change; check in rather than assuming that a previous yes still applies. Anyone can pause or stop at any point.
WA Health also encourages parents and carers to talk with young people about how alcohol or other drugs may affect decisions. The point is to plan for safer choices, not to assume everyone will use substances or have sex.

How condoms help—and what they do not do
Condoms help reduce the risk of STIs when used consistently and correctly. WA Health identifies condoms as the only contraception that also protects against STIs; other contraception may help prevent pregnancy but is not a substitute for STI protection. For personal contraception advice, WA Health suggests speaking with a doctor or Sexual Health Quarters.
Use a new condom for each sex act and follow its packet directions. WA Health’s advice also includes dams for oral sex. If a condom breaks, slips off or was not used, contact a doctor or clinic about testing and any other timely care that may be relevant.

When to get tested
Many STIs have no symptoms, so feeling well cannot confirm that you do not have an STI. WA Health says testing is the way to know. Its school-leavers advice recommends testing before and after Leavers, and its 2025 reminder says to see a doctor or clinic for testing after unprotected sex.
Free online chlamydia and gonorrhoea testing is available through Get the Facts without Medicare, according to a HealthyWA campaign notice. That service is specifically described for chlamydia and gonorrhoea; it is not a claim that every STI can be tested online or that the service suits every person. What Leavers WA is and when it happens in 2026
Leavers WA is an event for students who completed Year 12 or an equivalent qualification in Western Australia to celebrate with friends. The official site lists the 2026 dates as Monday 23 to Thursday 26 November. Event dates and practical arrangements can change, so check the official Leavers WA website for current information.
WA Health’s 2025 campaign details should not be assumed to apply again in 2026. In particular, the 2025 condom-wallet competition and distribution arrangement are historical details, not confirmation of a 2026 program.

WA STI figures are statewide, not Leavers-specific
WA Health reported more than 5,200 gonorrhoea notifications in each of 2024 and 2025, up from 2,909 cases in 2021; it also reported 776 infectious syphilis cases in 2025 and 20 recorded cases of congenital syphilis in WA since 2019. These are statewide surveillance figures and do not measure STI rates among Leavers attendees or teenagers. WA Health’s 2026 campaign notice reported these figures alongside a HealthySexual campaign that ran from 20 July to 30 September 2026; that campaign period has ended.
