What happened in the crash
Lynch was traveling eastbound on US 62 near El Paso when another vehicle struck hers head-on, according to a contemporaneous report that cited confirmation from the Texas Department of Public Safety. She died on December 22, 2023, aged 65. The initial report said the investigation was ongoing; the later criminal case produced a guilty plea and sentence.

What happened to the driver
On February 25, 2026, the Associated Press reported that Domenick Chavez pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, citing prosecutors’ announcement. AP said prosecutors reported that Chavez admitted reckless driving caused the collision. They also said he had been driving between 106 and 114 mph and that alcohol was not a factor.
Who Laura Lynch was in the Dixie Chicks
Lynch co-founded the group in 1989 with Robin Lynn Macy and sisters Martie and Emily Erwin. She played bass and later sang with the band, recording three albums before leaving in 1993. In chronological order, those releases were Thank Heavens for Dale Evans (1990), Little Ol’ Cowgirl (1992), and Shouldn’t a Told You That (1993).

The group changed its name from the Dixie Chicks to The Chicks in 2020. Lynch was part of its earlier lineup, so the historical name reflects the band as it was known during her time with it.

In a statement reproduced in an NPR report, the band remembered Lynch this way: “Laura was a bright light. Her infectious energy and humor gave a spark to the early days of our band.”
