Laura Jane Grace says “Your God (God’s Dick)” is a protest song about a contradiction she sees in how some people talk about gender: they use male pronouns for God but reject trans people’s pronouns. The song drew right-wing criticism after she performed it at Bernie Sanders’s March 7, 2025, rally in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
What happened at the Kenosha rally?
Grace performed “Your God (God’s Dick)” at Sanders’s “Fighting Oligarchy: Where We Go From Here” rally on March 7, 2025. The song had been released as a single the month before. Its profane title and lyrics became a focus of online criticism in the days after the performance.
The coverage by Them documented condemnations from right-wing commentators Robby Starbuck, Chaya Raichik of Libs of TikTok, Russell Brand, and Tim Pool. Some critics characterized the song as anti-Christian or blasphemous; those are their interpretations, not a neutral description of Grace’s stated purpose.
Grace also told Rolling Stone that Sanders’s team checked on her after receiving threats. That account concerns threats reported by the campaign team; it does not establish who made them or their details.

What did Grace say the song means?
In a March 13, 2025, Rolling Stone interview, syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment, Grace said she was not using profanity merely for shock: “I’m not being profane to be profane.” She described the rally performance as fitting the occasion: “It’s a straight-up protest song. I don’t know what else that event was supposed to be other than a protest rally.”
Her explanation centers on what she sees as a double standard: people may refer to God with male pronouns while refusing to respect the pronouns of trans people. Grace said she was asking a genuine question about that contrast. In an April 15, 2025, KQED interview, she described the backlash as “people choosing to be offended” without looking deeply at the song’s relevance to the conversation.
