Luca Marinelli, who plays Neil in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, wears a bandana in the game’s trailer—and that look revived a remark Hideo Kojima reportedly made years earlier: with a bandana, Marinelli would be the “spitting image of Solid Snake.” Kojima later clarified the distinction: Neil is not Snake.
Who plays Neil in Death Stranding 2?
Italian actor Luca Marinelli plays Neil, a character in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The resemblance story is about Marinelli’s appearance as Neil, not a casting announcement for a Metal Gear character.

Why did Kojima call him a “spitting image of Solid Snake”?
Contemporary reporting says Kojima wrote in an Instagram post in 2020 that Marinelli would be the “spitting image of Solid Snake” if he wore a bandana. When Marinelli later appeared in a bandana in a Death Stranding 2 trailer, the old comment drew renewed attention. The original post was not directly available for verification; GamesRadar reproduced the wording in its March 10, 2025 coverage (Insider Gaming; GamesRadar+).
Is Neil actually Solid Snake?
No. At the Sydney Film Festival, Kojima recounted telling Marinelli, “no, you’re not Snake. You just have a bandana on your head!” GamesRadar reported the exchange and said Kojima praised Marinelli’s performance. Kojima also reportedly described the casting challenge as finding an actor who could surpass Mads Mikkelsen’s Cliff. That context explains the comparison as a visual joke and a compliment to the actor; it does not establish Neil as Snake or confirm a Metal Gear crossover (GamesRadar+; GamesRadar+).

What game is Neil from?
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is a PlayStation 5 game. Official product information gives its release date as June 26, 2025, local time (Kojima Productions). In a PlayStation launch interview, the development team discussed its character-design process, including 4D scanning for key characters (PlayStation.Blog). These production details provide context for the game’s character presentation, but the bandana comparison remains a resemblance—not evidence that the characters share an identity.
