Miraitowa was the mascot of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Its name joins the Japanese words for “future” and “eternity,” and its indigo, rectangular design drew on the Games emblem and the idea of “innovation from harmony.” The Paralympic Games had a separate mascot: Someity.
What does Miraitowa mean?
The name combines mirai, meaning “future,” and towa, meaning “eternity.” Together, the words express a wish for the Games to help lead toward a future of enduring hope. The Olympic Studies Centre’s historical reference on Olympic mascots explains the name and character.
Who designed the Tokyo 2020 mascot?
Graphic designer Ryo Taniguchi created the winning design. Miraitowa’s traditional-meets-futuristic styling includes the Tokyo 2020 emblem on its forehead and an indigo-blue rectangular pattern that echoes the emblem. The International Olympic Committee’s Tokyo 2020 marketing report connects the mascots’ looks with the Games’ “innovation from harmony” concept.
How was Miraitowa chosen?
The selection began with a design competition and narrowed to three finalist sets. Pupils in Japan and at Japanese schools overseas selected the winners through class-level voting; this was not a general public poll.

What is Miraitowa’s personality?
The Tokyo 2020 closing-ceremony media guide describes Miraitowa as a fictional character whose personality was inspired by the Japanese proverb “learn from the past and develop new ideas.” It calls the mascot cheerful and remarkably athletic, with a strong sense of integrity and the special power to teleport instantly anywhere. These are character traits, not claims about a real performer.

The organizers envisioned the mascots as ambassadors: welcoming athletes and visitors, exciting children and fans, and helping communicate Olympic and Paralympic values. The Tokyo 2020 creative brief also anticipated appearances at events, in animations, and on licensed products. That plan describes intended uses; it does not establish the current availability or licensing status of any particular collectible.
