In Sony’s 2024 film Kraven the Hunter, Calypso Ezili is a lawyer played by Ariana DeBose who saves young Sergei Kravinoff with a mystical serum and later helps the adult Kraven. Marvel’s comics tell a different story: Calypso is a powerful voodoo sorceress, Kraven’s lover, and an influence on his renewed pursuit of Spider-Man. The two versions share a connection to Kraven, but their identities and roles are not interchangeable.

- Kraven the Hunter is the visceral, action-packed origin story of how and why one of Marvel's most iconic villains came to be. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Kraven, a man whose complex relationship with his ruthless father starts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, motivating him to become not only the greatest hunter in the world, but also one of its most feared.
That account makes Calypso more than a source of assistance: she is a romantic partner and an instigator in Kraven’s comic-book conflict with Spider-Man. A December 2024 comparison also describes her as a voodoo priestess who manipulates events to draw Kraven back toward that conflict.
How the film changes Calypso
| Aspect | Marvel comics | Kraven the Hunter (2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Powerful voodoo sorceress | Lawyer |
| Connection to Kraven | Kraven’s lover | Childhood acquaintance and adult ally |
| Story role | Encourages Kraven to resume hunting Spider-Man | Saves young Sergei with a mystical serum and later helps adult Kraven with targets |
The film shifts Calypso away from the sorceress-and-lover role associated with the comics account and gives her a more grounded professional identity, while retaining a supernatural element through the serum. In the film, her help is tied to Kraven’s pursuit of targets; in the comics account, her influence renews his pursuit of Spider-Man. Netflix Tudum’s March 13, 2025 explainer identifies DeBose as Calypso and summarizes the film’s childhood serum story. ComicBook.com’s December 15, 2024 comparison discusses differences between the film characters and their comic histories.

Why the continuity distinction matters
Calling film Calypso simply “the comics witch” obscures what the movie actually depicts. The lawyer, her grandmother’s serum, and her childhood bond with Sergei belong to the film’s version; the sorceress, lover, and renewed Spider-Man hunt belong to the comics account. They are alternate adaptations of the same character, not a single biography with every detail happening in one continuity.
