Parlement Technologies announced a proposed sale on October 17, 2022, but the two sides mutually terminated it in December before it closed.
What did Ye say about buying Parler?
On October 17, 2022, Parler’s then-parent company, Parlement Technologies, announced an agreement in principle to sell the social-media platform to Ye. The company said it expected the transaction to close in the fourth quarter of 2022; the announcement was not a completed sale. The Guardian reported Ye’s stated rationale: “In a world where conservative opinions are considered to be controversial we have to make sure we have the right to freely express ourselves.”
That was Ye’s explanation for the proposed purchase, not independent confirmation of how Parler’s policies worked. Parlement Technologies CEO George Farmer also promoted the proposed deal, saying, “This deal will change the world, and change the way the world thinks about free speech.” That was a prediction, not an outcome.
Why did the proposed Parler sale fall through?
On December 1, 2022, Parlement Technologies said it and Ye had mutually agreed to terminate the intended sale. The transaction did not close. CNBC reported the termination, ending the proposed acquisition announced in October.
