There is no survey showing exactly why individual viewers call themselves KPop Demon Hunters superfans. But the film’s sing-along screenings and documented fan activity point to a clear explanation: its music invites people to participate, and that participation becomes more powerful when it is shared. Fans sing, dance, dress up, make covers and cosplay, then circulate that enthusiasm online.
Why does the sing-along bring fans together?
A sing-along changes the audience’s role: viewers can perform the songs instead of simply watching the characters perform them. Netflix held a two-day theatrical sing-along event on August 23–24 in 2025 across the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Netflix later said the full-length sing-along version was available on its service. Netflix’s event recap describes the screenings; its 2025 announcement reported more than 1,300 sold-out screenings.
Co-director Maggie Kang described attending a screening as feeling “like a concert,” where she could experience “that communal love for Huntrix.” That is her first-person impression, not a poll of audience motives. Still, it captures what a sing-along can add: a roomful of people responding to the same songs together.
What gives fans ways to participate beyond the theater?
At-home singing and dancing
The film’s music can be replayed and performed away from a cinema. Netflix’s official collection of fan videos includes at-home sing-alongs and dance parties. The same collection shows fans making the film part of family activities, rather than keeping it to a single viewing.

Covers, costumes and cosplay
Fans also respond creatively: Netflix’s collection includes musical covers, family costumes and cosplay. Those examples show how enthusiasm can become self-expression, whether someone is singing a song, recreating a character’s look or sharing a fan-made performance.
Sharing the excitement
Kang said fan word of mouth and content created by fans and shared on social media helped the film reach a wider audience. That is the director’s account of its spread, not an independently measured causal finding. It does, however, connect private enjoyment to a social loop: fans make or share something, other viewers encounter it, and the film’s audience has new ways to join in.

How do the songs support that connection?
The songs are part of the story, not just music laid over it. In Netflix’s oral history of “Golden,” songwriter and Rumi singing voice EJAE recalled that the creators knew it was a hit for them but did not expect how far it would go. Her account of the song provides creator context for its role in the film. When a song is tied to a character and story, singing it can be both a musical pleasure and a way to reconnect with that story.

Netflix’s one-year report said the film had more than 600 million views since its June 20, 2025 debut, its lyric videos had 32 million views worldwide, and members had saved 1.5 million unique Moments from the movie. The same report said Little Golden Books’ For the Fans (KPop Demon Hunters) sold over 1.6 million copies across the US, UK, Canada, Germany and Spain. Views, saved Moments, sold-out screenings and book sales indicate reach or engagement; none reveals what share of viewers identify as superfans or why any particular person does. The available evidence supports a grounded interpretation rather than a universal explanation: the film offers music people can perform, characters and songs to connect with, and opportunities to make that connection visible with others.
