Its extra limbs and exaggerated proportions make it look more like a creature from a monster movie than a conventional T. rex—and that unsettling design is meant to inspire both fear and sympathy.
What is the mutant dinosaur in Jurassic World Rebirth?
It is the Distortus rex, or D-Rex. The name identifies a fictional creature created for the film, not a recognized dinosaur species or a claim about real dinosaur anatomy.
Why does the Distortus rex look so different?
Mattel’s official description of its licensed figure highlights the design’s six limbs and oversized head and shoulders, calling them “horribly hybrid details.” That is promotional language describing the film creature, rather than scientific analysis. The effect is a distorted T. rex silhouette: familiar enough to suggest the famous predator, but altered into something visibly abnormal. Mattel’s Super Colossal Distortus rex page describes the film-inspired design.
Director Gareth Edwards offered a deliberately vivid creative comparison: he said it was “kind of like if the T-Rex was designed by HR Giger, and then that whole thing had sex with a Rancor.” The comparison, reported by GamesRadar in its May 2, 2025 report of an Empire interview, points to a grotesque, biomechanical look. It is Edwards’s description of the design, not a biological classification.

Is the D-Rex only meant to be scary?
No. The design also invites pity. In the same report, ILM visual effects supervisor David Vickery said Edwards wanted viewers to feel sorry for the creature as well as terrified: its deformities cause pain and encumber it. That tension gives the D-Rex a different effect from a straightforward monster; its frightening appearance is tied to a body that is also portrayed as burdened.
Which Distortus rex figures does Mattel list?
Mattel lists two versions with different sizes and play features. The manufacturer’s listed specifications are:
| Figure | Size | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Chompin’ Distortus rex | 16.8 inches long | Button-activated chomping action and an app-tracking code; recommended for ages 4 and up. |
| Super Colossal Distortus rex | 31 inches long and more than 14 inches tall | Movable joints and a mouth-and-stomach mechanism that swallows and releases separately sold mini dinosaur figures; recommended for ages 4 and up. |
These are product-page specifications, not measurements of the creature within the film. The listed features help distinguish a smaller chomping figure from the much larger, poseable version. Check Mattel or a retailer for current stock and pricing.

Where does the creature fit into the film’s wider merchandise release?
Universal Products & Experiences announced a broad Jurassic World Rebirth merchandise program in May 2025, naming Mattel and LEGO Group as master toy partners alongside other companies working across products such as apparel, accessories, games and digital content. That announcement establishes a wider licensed-product program; it does not mean every named partner makes a D-Rex item. Universal’s announcement is dated May 22, 2025.
