Jeff Cobb joined WWE in 2025 as JC Mateo, debuting at Backlash on May 10 by attacking LA Knight during Jacob Fatu’s United States Championship defense. That WWE chapter has since ended: NJPW reported on October 7, 2026, that Cobb had returned to the promotion and joined Unbound Co. The “newest WWE Superstar” label belongs to his 2025 debut, not his current status.
Who is Jeff Cobb, and why did WWE call him JC Mateo?
Jeff Cobb is the name used for him in his earlier wrestling career and in current NJPW coverage. WWE presented him as JC Mateo, a distinct ring name for his WWE character. WWE’s profile identifies Mateo with Solo Sikoa’s MFT group and lists his signature move as Tour of the Islands. Those are WWE’s billed character details, not independent measurements or a complete account of Cobb’s career.
WWE billed Mateo at 5 feet 10 inches and 264 pounds. The figures come from the promotion’s profile and should be understood as WWE-listed stats. WWE also describes him as having represented Guam in the Olympics; the sources cited here do not establish an Olympic event result or placement.
How did JC Mateo make his WWE debut?
Mateo first appeared at WWE’s Backlash event on May 10, 2025. During the fatal four-way match in which Jacob Fatu defended the United States Championship against LA Knight, Drew McIntyre and Damian Priest, Mateo attacked Knight at ringside. The interruption helped create the opening Fatu used to retain the title, according to WWE’s official Backlash results.

Cobb had been associated with WWE before that debut, but not as a contracted WWE wrestler. WWE says he attended a Performance Center tryout in September 2014 as an Olympic wrestler representing Guam. A contemporaneous report quoting Cobb’s KUAM interview says his last NJPW match before WWE was April 19, 2025, and that his WWE contract took effect April 21. Those contract dates are Cobb’s account as relayed by NoDQ’s May 23, 2025 report, rather than dates announced in a WWE contract statement.
What was Cobb’s WWE role?
WWE’s profile placed JC Mateo with Solo Sikoa’s MFT group. His Backlash debut made him part of a United States Championship story by interfering against Knight during Fatu’s defense. WWE’s profile and results establish that presentation; they do not, by themselves, establish current employment or a complete record of the character’s WWE appearances.

What happened after Cobb left WWE?
NJPW reported that Cobb returned to the promotion in August 2026 after a hiatus and joined Unbound Co. On October 7, NJPW named him as the third member of the group’s announced challenge for the NEVER 6-Man Tag Team Championship at the forthcoming King of Pro-Wrestling show. That announcement was a preview of a scheduled match, not confirmation of its result. See NJPW’s October 7 announcement for the promotion’s latest account.

How did Cobb describe the difference between WWE and NJPW?
In an NJPW interview published September 15, 2026, Cobb contrasted WWE’s weekly television and entertainment emphasis with NJPW’s touring and wrestling focus. That is his account of the formats he experienced, rather than an objective definition of either promotion. The interview is available from NJPW.
The timeline makes the distinction clear: Cobb’s WWE debut was in May 2025 as JC Mateo; by August 2026 he had returned to NJPW, where he was identified with Unbound Co. in October.
