The event brought together invited guests in the Palace garden for an afternoon of royal visits, music, food and drink.
When was the first Buckingham Palace garden party of 2026?
The King and Queen gave an afternoon party in the garden of Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, 6 May 2026. The Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust described it the following day as the first garden party of the year; The Standard also called it the first of the season.
The Court Circular, the Royal Household’s official record of engagements, says the party was held “to recognise and celebrate Frontline Workers.” That is the event’s stated purpose; the available reports do not include a named royal’s separate explanation.
Who attended and who was recognised?
The Court Circular lists the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Princess Royal, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester as present. It also records the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms and Yeomen of the Guard on duty. Music was provided by the Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines Collingwood and the Band and Bugles of The Rifles.

One account of the guests came from Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust. It reported that Group Chief Medical Officer Jonathan Odum attended in recognition of his commitments to the NHS and patient care across the Black Country. The trust also said Jayne Dunn was nominated for her work bringing the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital to fruition, and Yunzheng Jiao for his impact in clinical research delivery and pharmacy research. These are examples from the trust’s representatives, not a complete guest list.
How many people attended?
The Standard reported that 8,000 guests attended the 6 May party. The Court Circular does not give an attendance count, so the figure should be understood as the newspaper’s report rather than an official count.

Separately, the Royal Family’s general garden-party guidance says over 30,000 guests are invited each year to parties at Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Holyroodhouse combined. That annual figure is not the turnout at the 6 May event.
What happens at a royal garden party?
According to the Royal Family’s guide, Palace gates open at around 3 p.m. and the party begins at 4 p.m., when members of the Royal Family enter the garden as a military band plays the National Anthem. Royals circulate among guests in lanes and then meet more people at the Royal Tea Tent. Guests can stroll through the gardens and have food and drink.

The Sovereign traditionally hosts three garden parties at Buckingham Palace and one at Holyroodhouse in Scotland. The Royal Family describes them as occasions to meet people from a wide range of backgrounds who have made a positive impact in their communities. The events developed from presentation parties historically attended by debutantes into a way of recognising public service.

Guests are nominated through a long-established network of sponsors, rather than by applying directly to the Palace. The Royal Family identifies sponsors including Lord-Lieutenants, societies and associations, government departments, local government, the services, churches and other faith groups. Its guidance says that applying directly to Buckingham Palace cannot secure an invitation.
