Kim Kardashian’s controversial PAPER magazine cover photo was created for a 2014 shoot—not a newly staged recreation. The champagne-glass image echoed an earlier Jean-Paul Goude photograph, and Kardashian revisited how the shoot came together in a 2025 interview.
What did Kim Kardashian recreate?
PAPER published “Break the Internet: Kim Kardashian” on November 12, 2014. The feature was written by Amanda Fortini and photographed by Jean-Paul Goude. Its cover set included two images: a nude portrait and a more demure pose with Kardashian balancing a champagne glass on her backside. The latter referenced Goude’s earlier work. PAPER’s original feature presents the shoot and its two cover images.
The 1976 photograph behind the champagne image
The Guardian described Kardashian’s champagne-glass pose as a recreation of a 1976 photograph by Goude featuring a model it names as Carolina Burmont. That is the spelling used by the newspaper; the name should not be treated as independently confirmed here. The Guardian’s account also places the image within Goude’s broader practice of constructing striking photographs.
The same article notes criticism of Goude’s depictions of Black women. That criticism is part of the context surrounding his work, but it should be attributed to the critics and the Guardian’s discussion rather than treated as a settled statement of the photographer’s intent.

What Kardashian later said about the shoot
In an October 2025 PAPER retrospective, Kardashian said the champagne-glass picture was the first image she remembers having in mind. She recalled asking Goude to make “something other than just the this one shot,” after which they made the nude pictures. PAPER quoted her describing the conversation: “Hey, like it’s me. There’s no publicist here. There’s no one here. Like, you wanna shoot one, like one more like something other than just the this one shot?” The retrospective identifies this as her recollection in an interview with Alex Cooper. It is a later account of her memory, not production documentation.
Kardashian also recalled that her mother reacted strongly when the published pictures appeared. Her account adds a personal detail to the shoot’s reception, but does not establish the exact circumstances of production beyond her recollection.

Why the wording “recreates” can be misleading
The 2014 Kardashian image itself was a recreation or reference to Goude’s 1976 photograph. The available reporting does not establish a separate, newly staged event in which Kardashian recreated her PAPER cover years later. A 2025 retrospective revisited the original shoot; it was not evidence of a new photo session.
A contemporaneous E! report said the shoot took place in September during Paris Fashion Week Spring 2015 and relayed an unnamed source’s account that the champagne image was the planned starting point. Because that account was anonymous, Kardashian’s later first-person recollection is the stronger basis for describing what she remembers intending. E!’s contemporaneous report provides the date and attributed account.
