Catherine, Princess of Wales, wore the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara at a state banquet in September 2025, according to El País. The piece is strongly associated with Princess Diana, but the $135 million figure is not an established valuation: it is an estimate attributed to a jeweler in an AOL search-result summary, not an official appraisal or confirmed sale price.
Which tiara did Kate Middleton wear?
It was the Cambridge Lover’s Knot, also called Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot. It is recognizable by its diamond arches, hanging pearls and lover’s-knot motifs. El País describes the design as having 19 diamond arches decorated with 39 pearls; that count is the newspaper’s description, not a verified inventory record.
Catherine wore it at a September 2025 state banquet, according to El País. Earlier documented appearances include the Buckingham Palace Diplomatic Reception on December 8, 2015, reported by ABC News, and another Diplomatic Reception in December 2018, reported by Good Morning America. The 2025 appearance is the latest dated one in these reports.
Why is it associated with Princess Diana?
Queen Mary commissioned the tiara from Garrard around 1913–1914, according to ABC News; El País gives the year as 1913. Its design was inspired by an earlier Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara, El País reports.

Queen Elizabeth II gave the tiara to Diana in connection with her marriage, ABC News says. El País describes it as a long-term loan that Diana returned after her divorce. Taken together, the accounts support saying Diana wore it on loan, while the precise legal terms of the transfer are not consistently described in these reports.
Diana wore the Lover’s Knot on later occasions, helping make it one of the pieces most closely associated with her. ABC royal contributor Victoria Murphy called it “what is proving to be her favorite tiara actually” in Good Morning America’s report on Catherine’s 2018 appearance. That is a commentator’s characterization, not a formal ranking of Diana’s jewelry.

Is the Lover’s Knot the tiara Diana wore at her wedding?
No. Diana wore the Spencer tiara at her 1981 wedding, not the Cambridge Lover’s Knot. The Spencer tiara is a Spencer family heirloom; the Lover’s Knot is the royal piece associated with Queen Mary and later worn by Diana. El País distinguishes the two in its account of their provenance.
| Tiara | Provenance | Connection to Diana |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge Lover’s Knot | Commissioned by Queen Mary from Garrard around 1913–1914, according to ABC News and El País. | A royal tiara Diana wore; reports describe it as loaned to her. Catherine has worn it at documented public events. |
| Spencer tiara | Spencer family heirloom, according to El País. | The tiara Diana wore at her 1981 wedding. |
What is behind the $135 million estimate?
A 2025 AOL search-result summary attributes an estimate of $135 million, or potentially more, to Maxwell Stone of U.K. jeweler Steven Stone. The underlying AOL page was not accessible, and no official appraisal or transaction record is established in the cited material. The figure should therefore be treated as a reported jeweler’s estimate—not a verified market value, sale price or confirmed royal valuation.
