The figure comes from a 2007 WWE article, which does not identify who measured his hand or explain how the span was defined. It is best treated as a reported figure, not an independently verified measurement.
What does the 16-inch figure mean?
WWE’s March 8, 2007 article, “The Big One”, describes “the massive 16-inch span of his hand.” It is the clearest sourced numerical claim about the size of André’s hands. The article does not name a measurer, give a measurement date, define the endpoints used for “span,” or cite a measurement record.
That distinction matters: the source reports a 16-inch span, but readers cannot use the article to verify the figure or determine precisely how it was taken. The reviewed sources do not offer another measured hand span to confirm or challenge it.
What other evidence shows their scale?
A hand mold used for a statue
In a 2013 account of creating an André statue, WWE says the artists had photocopies of his hands and made a mold of his hand imprint. Sculptor Karen Atta described his proportions as “grandiose” but “not absurd for a human being,” calling him “kind of perfectly proportioned.” This documents reference material used for the statue; it does not establish that the mold produced or verified the 16-inch claim.

A beer can in a photograph
Biography.com describes a regular beer can looking miniaturized in André’s hand in a photograph from a 1981 Sports Illustrated profile. The image offers a vivid visual comparison, but it is not a measured comparison and cannot establish a hand-span value.
Is the ring story another hand measurement?
No. A 2024 Ripley’s retrospective recounts that André’s fingers were large enough for the opening of his ring to fit a silver dollar. Ripley’s gives the coin’s diameter as 38.1 mm. That is context for an anecdote about a ring opening; it is not a measurement of André’s hand span, palm width, or finger circumference, and those measures should not be treated as interchangeable.

What can his medical history tell us?
WWE and André’s official biography discuss acromegaly, while Ripley’s describes gigantism and later acromegaly (WWE; AndreTheGiant.com; Ripley’s). These sources connect the conditions with André’s exceptional size. They do not provide a way to calculate his hand dimensions or independently confirm the 16-inch span.
