What Jennifer Lawrence said about Passengers
In an interview discussed in The Independent’s November 2022 report, Lawrence was asked about negative reviews for Passengers. She described feeling that people around her were there because she was part of the project, then identified the film when asked which one she meant.

Lawrence recalled Adele advising her against it: “Adele told me not to do it!” She said Adele’s reasoning was, “I feel like space movies are the new vampire movies,” and concluded, “I should have listened to her.” These are Lawrence’s reported recollections of Adele’s advice, not a separate direct interview with Adele.
Lawrence also described that period as one in which she felt she was reacting rather than acting. She said she felt more like a celebrity than an actor and disconnected from her creativity and imagination. The report places those reflections alongside the pressure and overexposure she experienced after The Hunger Games.

- Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt star in an adventure about two passengers traveling to a new planet when their spaceship malfunctions.
Her 2017 comments were more qualified
Lawrence had expressed reservations about the film earlier. In 2017, TheWrap reported comments from a Vogue interview in which she agreed with criticism that the story would have worked better if it began when her character woke up. “I’m disappointed in myself that I didn’t spot it,” she said.
She described the screenplay as “a tainted, complicated love story” and said she wished she had looked more deeply at some aspects before accepting the role. But she also defended the film: “It definitely wasn’t a failure. I’m not embarrassed by it by any means.”

What the story-structure criticism was about
Passengers is a 2016 science-fiction romance starring Lawrence and Chris Pratt. Its premise centers on a disruption that wakes their characters 90 years early during a journey to a new planet, as ABC News described in December 2016.
The criticism Lawrence addressed concerned where the film begins: viewers and critics questioned why it does not start with her character waking. TheWrap’s account describes objections to Pratt’s character waking Lawrence’s character for selfish reasons, with serious consequences for her. Lawrence’s 2017 remarks acknowledged that structural concern; they do not amount to a claim that she hated the movie.

How her remarks changed between 2017 and 2022
| Interview | Framing | What Lawrence said |
|---|---|---|
| 2017, reported by TheWrap | Qualified criticism alongside a defense of the film | She regretted not spotting a story-structure issue before accepting, while saying the film was not a failure and she was not embarrassed by it. |
| 2022, reported by The Independent | More direct retrospective regret | She recalled Adele’s warning and said, “I should have listened to her.” |
The two sets of comments show a change in emphasis, not proof of a simple reversal. Lawrence’s 2017 remarks focused on a specific storytelling choice and included a defense of the film; the 2022 account gives a clearer expression of regret about her decision to make it.

Not in the wording reported by these sources. The closest direct statement is her 2022 reflection, “I should have listened to her,” referring to Adele’s advice not to do the film. In 2017, Lawrence said she wished she had examined aspects of the screenplay more deeply before accepting. The phrase “never should have accepted” captures an interpretation of those remarks, not a verified quotation.
