In a September 2023 interview, Kareena Kapoor Khan called Jaane Jaan “a mood” and said she and director Sujoy Ghosh wanted to make a film viewers could return to years later. She was describing a creative ambition—not predicting how audiences would respond or confirming the film’s current availability on Netflix.
What Kareena Kapoor Khan meant by “a mood”
“The film is a mood. When Sujoy and I were chatting, I said, let’s make a film that you can watch five or ten years later. If it is for Netflix, it’s there for posterity. People can curl up and watch it years later. Sujoy has created that mood and atmosphere,” Kapoor Khan told Nandini Ramnath in Scroll’s September 20, 2023 interview.
Her “five or ten years” refers to the kind of lasting, revisitable experience she hoped the film would offer. It is an expression of intent, not a measured claim about the film’s future audience or a guarantee that it will remain available on a particular service.
Why playing Maya D’Souza was tricky
In Jaane Jaan, Kapoor Khan plays Maya D’Souza, a woman at the center of a crime thriller. She said the challenge was to keep Maya’s thoughts partly concealed while still making her someone viewers could root for: “It was kind of tricky. You don’t know what Maya is thinking. Performing in a thriller like this is intense – how much can you show and how much can’t you? And it’s also important to be likeable, you have to root for Maya.”

That balance—selective disclosure without losing the audience’s sympathy—was central to Kapoor Khan’s account of the performance. She also described acting as an intuitive process: “Ultimately, I think acting is an emotion and a feeling – at least I go by that.” She said the cast did some reading before filming, but emphasized the feeling and energy between co-stars rather than extensive workshops as the basis of the work. These are her views on acting, not a general rule for how performances are made.
The karaoke-bar scene
Kapoor Khan singled out a karaoke sequence shot in a local bar. Ghosh asked her to sing, she said, and the scene offers a rare moment when Maya smiles against the distress that marks much of the story. It illustrates the contrast she described: a character whose inner life is not always visible, but who still needs moments that make her feel human and approachable.

How Jaane Jaan relates to The Devotion of Suspect X
Scroll describes Jaane Jaan as Ghosh’s adaptation of Keigo Higashino’s mystery novel The Devotion of Suspect X. The interview says development had been under way for close to a decade and that the film gives Maya greater prominence. Kapoor Khan said she had not read the novel before accepting the role, though she enjoys crime thrillers.
The novel’s crime-and-alibi premise helps explain the story’s mystery framework: a neighbor constructs an alibi after a woman and her daughter kill the woman’s former husband. Scroll’s 2015 account of Higashino’s novel identifies it as a Japanese crime novel first published in 2005 and translated in 2011. The reporting supports the shared adaptation context and the novel’s premise, but not a scene-by-scene comparison or a claim that the film duplicates the book.

The interview’s career context
Kapoor Khan also framed the role as part of her desire to move between different kinds of work, balancing glamour, depth and commercial projects. In the 2023 conversation she discussed Jaane Jaan, The Buckingham Murders and The Crew, and said that parenting alongside work meant she could take on about two projects. She also reflected that age and experience bring gravitas to roles. Those comments describe her outlook at the time of the interview, not a current project slate.
