On August 11, 2025, the Los Angeles Times reported that Butte-Silver Bow County coroner Dan Hollis confirmed melanoma as the cause of death. Hollis said Blackstock died at home in Montana under hospice care and described the manner of death as natural causes. These later coroner details are distinct from the family’s initial statement.

On August 6, 2025, while Blackstock was ill, Clarkson announced that she was postponing four remaining August Las Vegas residency performances. Blackstock and Clarkson’s marriage and family
Blackstock and Clarkson met at a rehearsal for the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2006 and began dating after reconnecting at a Super Bowl in 2012. They married in October 2013. Clarkson filed for divorce in 2020, citing irreconcilable differences; the divorce was finalized in 2022.
They had two children together, River and Remington. Blackstock also had two older children, Savannah and Seth, from a previous marriage. He became a grandfather in 2022, when Savannah had a son.
