What Katy Perry has said her tattoos mean
“Jesus” on her wrist
Perry gave the clearest first-person explanation of this tattoo in a 2009 interview with Esquire. She said she got it at 18, on the Sunset Strip, and wanted a lasting reminder of where she came from. She also connected the tattoo to her father, saying he had four tattoos, all reading “Jesus.”
“I got that when I was eighteen, on the Sunset Strip. I was with my boyfriend, and I just wanted to get something so I would always remember where I came from.”
Sanskrit phrase: “go with the flow”
Perry has described the meaning of her Sanskrit tattoo as “go with the flow,” according to a Vogue India interview. Harper’s Bazaar reported that Perry and then-husband Russell Brand had matching inner-arm tattoos bearing that wording. This is the meaning attributed to Perry in those accounts; it is not an independent verification of the Sanskrit text.

“XLIX” after the Super Bowl
The Roman numerals “XLIX” refer to Super Bowl 49, whose halftime show Perry headlined. ABC News reported that she got the tattoo after the performance to commemorate it, and Time also covered the new ink at the time.
Other reported designs—and what remains uncertain
Entertainment guides catalogue additional designs, including a lotus and tour-related motifs. A reported design alone does not establish what it means to Perry. For example, StyleCraze’s guide notes that Perry had not volunteered a meaning for the lotus in the reporting it reviewed. Interpretations offered without a clear statement from Perry should therefore be treated as speculation, not confirmed explanations.

The available accounts do not establish a comprehensive, current inventory of every tattoo or any later additions or changes. The most reliable way to understand the best-documented tattoos is to distinguish Perry’s own explanation from contemporaneous reporting about an event and from secondary catalogues.
