The story’s focus is their relationship after the loss: Bieber’s character reaches back toward his grandmother, and shared activities give the two a way to be together again. That is the video’s particular fictional portrayal, not a guide to how grief unfolds for everyone.
Who are Justin Bieber and Diane Keaton playing?
Bieber plays the grandson, while Keaton plays his grandmother, whose husband has died. The video centers on the bond between these two characters and the place the deceased husband continues to hold in their family. Keaton’s role is fictional; the video does not present the story as autobiographical.

How did Diane Keaton join the video?
Vogue reported that Bieber called Keaton to ask her to appear. Keaton recalled her response: “He called me up and I said, ‘yeah, sure.’” After the project, she reacted on Instagram, as reported by Good Morning America: “AM I DREAMING??? WHAT AN HONOR IT WAS TO WORK WITH JUSTIN BIEBER AND HIS INCREDIBLE TEAM!!!”

Universal Music Canada announced the “Ghost” video on October 8, 2021, identifying Colin Tilley as its director and “Ghost” as a single from Bieber’s album Justice. The announcement also noted that “Red Eye,” “Angels Speak” and “Hailey,” which had previously appeared only on physical editions, were being added to Justice: The Complete Edition for streaming platforms.
