Katie Maloney said she asked Tom Schwartz for a divorce after a gradual realization that she was unhappy, disconnected and no longer willing to put her own needs behind the relationship. She later described years of accumulated hurt, including past cheating, and said she wanted a partner whose commitment and goals matched hers. These are Katie’s explanations at different points in time—not proof of one independently established cause.
Katie’s initial explanation: unhappiness that built over time
In comments reported by Bravo on March 18, 2022, Katie described the decision as the result of a growing awareness rather than one dramatic incident. “There wasn’t some crazy fight that resulted in this,” she said. She said she had been unhappy and had focused on Tom, their relationship and their future without giving enough priority to her own happiness.
She characterized the relationship as one in which she felt disconnected and as though she was drifting away. In her account, recognizing that state—and deciding she needed to prioritize herself—was central to ending the marriage. Entertainment Tonight’s March 21, 2022 report also covered her explanation of the decision as painful and long considered.
What Katie said about feeling unprioritized
A later account gave more detail about how she experienced the relationship. In Bravo’s February 8, 2023 recap of the Vanderpump Rules Season 10 premiere, Katie said, “We’ve had a lot of issues. I’ve never been a priority to him.” The remark was her description of the relationship, not an independently verified finding.

Schwartz offered his own perspective in the episode recap. He said, “Long story short, I just didn’t know how to make her happy,” and acknowledged that he had not been a good listener. His comments provide context for how he understood the problems; they do not replace Katie’s account of why she chose to leave.
Her 2024 retrospective added accumulated hurt and mismatched expectations
In a retrospective reported by Bravo on November 10, 2024, Katie added context beyond her first public explanation. She referred to past cheating and years of hurt, and described Schwartz’s uncertainty around major commitments. She also said she wanted a partner with the same goals and intentions.

That later explanation adds factors Katie identified with the benefit of time. It should be read alongside—not collapsed into—the 2022 account, in which she emphasized unhappiness, disconnection and choosing to prioritize herself. The reports do not establish a single definitive cause beyond what she said publicly.

Bravo’s 2023 recap attributes to Katie the relationship duration she described: 12 years together and five years married. Those figures refer to their relationship and marriage, not to a broader statistic.
