Ace Frehley, KISS’s original lead guitarist and a founding member, died at 74 on October 16, 2025. The Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office later determined that blunt force injuries to the head sustained in a fall caused his death and classified it as accidental, according to the Associated Press.
How did Ace Frehley die?
When Frehley’s family announced his death on October 16, 2025, the initial report said he had died in Morristown, New Jersey, following a recent fall, according to his agent. On November 11, the Associated Press reported the medical examiner’s determination: blunt force injuries to the head from a fall caused his death, and the manner of death was accidental.

The medical examiner’s finding was reported by the Associated Press; the underlying autopsy report was not directly reviewed for that report. The specific circumstances of the fall have not been established in the cited accounts.
Why Ace Frehley mattered to KISS
Born Paul Daniel Frehley, he was part of KISS’s original lineup alongside Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and Peter Criss. The band became known for theatrical performances, distinctive makeup and larger-than-life stage personas. Frehley’s persona was “Space Ace,” also known as “The Spaceman,” and his lead guitar work was part of the group’s formative identity.

Frehley left KISS in 1982 and pursued a solo career. He returned for the band’s 1996 reunion and remained with KISS through a 2002 Winter Olympics performance, the Associated Press reported. The separation, solo period and reunion are distinct chapters in his career rather than a continuous tenure with the band.
Frehley’s music and KISS’s legacy
Frehley’s legacy includes both his work in KISS and his solo career. One specific measure of the band’s wider popular reach: “Beth” peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Top 100 in 1976, as reported by the Associated Press. That chart position belongs to the song and should not be read as a measure of Frehley’s solo performance.

After Frehley’s death, founding members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons said in a joint statement reported by the Associated Press: “We are devastated by the passing of Ace Frehley. He was an essential and irreplaceable rock soldier during some of the most formative foundational chapters of the band and its history. He is and will always be a part of KISS’s legacy.”
