Jujutsu Kaisen is not currently on hiatus: its original manga concluded in September 2024. Before that ending, it had separate health-related schedule breaks in 2021 and 2024. Gege Akutami’s public statements do not establish that he had a serious illness, and the specific health issue behind either break was not named.
Is the original Jujutsu Kaisen manga still on hiatus?
No. The original manga concluded in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 44 on September 30, 2024, ending six and a half years of serialization, according to the official franchise announcement. Calling that completed series “currently on hiatus” is outdated.

The franchise site now also lists Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, a separate short-term spin-off written by Akutami and drawn by Yuji Iwasaki that began in 2025. It is not a resumption of the original weekly serialization. The official series story page describes the original manga as complete.
What happened during the 2021 hiatus?
On June 13, 2021, VIZ published an announcement from the Weekly Shonen Jump editorial department saying the manga would pause for Akutami’s health. Akutami wrote that the break was expected to last about a month. He said the editors had urged him to rest, but he had put it off because he wanted to move the weekly story forward quickly.

Akutami also addressed the health rumors directly: “I want to reassure everyone that I am not suffering from any kind of serious illness and my mental state is strong.” He described physical and scheduling difficulties accumulating, writing, “Those type of things all piled up to bring me to my current state.” The published note gives context for the break but does not name a diagnosis. How was the 2024 break different?
A separate schedule update came on June 24, 2024. The editorial department said the manga’s return would move from the issue scheduled for July 1 to the issue on sale July 8. It stated that Akutami had recovered, but that he and the editors had decided he should resume writing when fully ready. The notice did not identify a specific illness or explain the cause of the break. See the official Weekly Shonen Jump notice.

Was Gege Akutami seriously ill?
The public statements cited here do not support that claim. In 2021, Akutami explicitly said he was not suffering from a serious illness. The 2024 editorial notice said he had recovered but did not disclose what had caused the break. Neither source names a diagnosis, hospitalization, or prognosis, so claims about a particular condition go beyond what has been publicly established in these statements.

The official franchise pages give circulation figures from different dates, so they should be read as separate snapshots rather than conflicting numbers. The September 2024 conclusion announcement reported 100 million copies in circulation, including digital editions. The current franchise story page, accessed in 2026, reports 150 million copies worldwide in series circulation, also including digital editions. These are publisher-reported circulation figures, not a diagnosis or measure of Akutami’s health.
