John Cena’s tense face-to-face with Logan Paul on the Aug. 29, 2025, episode of WWE SmackDown gave their impending Clash in Paris match a final burst of conflict. The segment also offered a character-driven highlight: Wrestling Inc.’s contemporaneous review argued that Paul’s promos brought out shades of old-school Cena.
Why the face-to-face mattered

The interesting point is the shift in emphasis: rather than treating the segment only as a clash between two famous personalities, the review saw Paul’s delivery as a foil that made Cena’s familiar promo style more apparent.

Cadence and verbal sparring
The review focused on Cena’s cadence and verbal lines. In that view, Paul’s antagonism gave Cena room to lean into the rhythm and sharpness associated with his older character work. The appeal was not simply nostalgia for a past era; it was the way the exchange let a recognizable version of Cena surface in the context of a current rivalry.
A small moment with a young fan
The reviewer also noted Cena acknowledging a young fan in the crowd. That interaction added a personal beat to a segment otherwise built around confrontation. It gave the promo a second register—an audience connection alongside the verbal contest—without changing the stakes of the match itself.

Other episode highlights beyond the segment
The face-to-face was one part of a broader episode. WWE’s official results provide the verifiable outcomes; calling these moments highlights reflects editorial judgment, not measured audience consensus.
- Sami Zayn won the United States Championship. WWE says Zayn defeated Solo Sikoa for the title, making the result a major change on the episode’s card.
- The Street Profits earned a tag title opportunity. They defeated Carmelo Hayes and The Miz to secure the opportunity, according to WWE’s results.
Those results gave the show stakes beyond the Cena-Paul build: a championship changed hands, and a tag-team contender was determined. They are distinct from the subjective case for why the face-to-face worked.
