John Sinclair, the Detroit poet, music writer, activist and MC5 manager whose 1969 marijuana sentence became a cause célèbre, died on April 2, 2024, at 82. His work joined poetry, independent publishing, music and radical politics; a December 1971 freedom rally featuring John Lennon and Yoko Ono drew national attention to his imprisonment, but a change in Michigan law—not the rally alone—preceded his release.
Who was John Sinclair?
Born in Flint, Michigan, in 1941 and raised in Davison, Sinclair graduated from the University of Michigan in 1964 with a degree in English literature. He became a poet, author, performer, music critic and organizer in Detroit’s counterculture. His career connected poetry and jazz with independent publishing, music and political activism.
From 1964 onward, he helped build Detroit cultural projects including the Detroit Artists’ Workshop and Artists’ Workshop Press. The Poetry Foundation describes his broad literary and recording career, which included poetry performed with musical accompaniment.
What was Sinclair’s connection to the MC5?
Sinclair managed the Detroit rock band MC5 from 1966 to 1969, according to the Detroit Historical Society. He connected the group’s performances with a wider cultural and political project. The band’s place in his story is significant, but it was one part of a career that also included poetry, criticism, publishing and organizing.

What was the White Panther Party?
In 1968, Sinclair, his wife Leni Sinclair and Lawrence “Pun” Plamondon co-founded the White Panther Party. The Poetry Foundation describes it as founded in support of civil rights. It was a separate organization from the Black Panther Party; Sinclair and his associates framed their work as an anti-racist political alignment, not as the same group under another name.
Why was John Sinclair in prison?
In 1969, Sinclair was sentenced to 9½ to 10 years in prison for giving two marijuana joints to undercover officers. At the time, marijuana possession was a felony in Michigan carrying a possible sentence of up to ten years. His unusually long sentence for a small amount of cannabis helped turn the case into a national focus of marijuana-law reform activism.

What happened at the John Sinclair Freedom Rally?
The John Sinclair Freedom Rally took place at the University of Michigan’s Crisler Arena on December 10 and 11, 1971. Performers included John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The event made Sinclair’s case visible to a broad audience, but the legal sequence matters: Michigan lawmakers voted to reduce the penalty for possession of small amounts the day before the rally, and Sinclair was released three days after it, after serving about 29 months.
What did Sinclair do after his release?
Sinclair continued advocating for marijuana legalization and worked in music, radio and education. He also kept recording and performing poetry, often with musical accompaniment. Michigan legalized recreational cannabis in 2018, a change Sinclair celebrated.

In 2019, Sinclair told the Detroit Free Press, as quoted by the Associated Press: “I’m the pioneer. I was the first one in Michigan who said marijuana should be legal, and they said I was totally nuts.” Reflecting on the politics of his generation in 2013, he said, as reported by the AP: “In those times, we considered ourselves revolutionaries. We wanted equal distribution of wealth. We didn’t want 1 percent of the rich running everything. Of course, we lost.”
