John Cena and AJ Lee’s “relationship” was a WWE storyline, not a real-life affair established by the available sources. The angle began with AJ being forced to step down as Raw General Manager in October 2012, grew through two on-air kisses in November, and reached its turn when AJ betrayed Cena at TLC on December 16.
What was the Cena–AJ Lee relationship?
It was a scripted WWE story built around an alleged romance and a public scandal. In its October 23, 2012 recap of Raw, WWE said the Board of Directors had made General Manager AJ Lee step down for “fraternizing with a WWE Superstar.” AJ named Cena, but WWE framed the matter as an allegation and left its meaning open for the audience—not as confirmation of a real-life affair. How the scandal developed
Vickie Guerrero’s purported evidence
On the October 29 Raw, Vickie Guerrero presented what she described as evidence: a joking burger date, a hug, a restaurant photo, and hotel footage. Cena’s explanation was that the footage showed a business meeting and a harmless walk to AJ’s hotel-room door. WWE’s next-day recap questioned both the source and interpretation of the material, making the tabloid-style uncertainty part of the angle. Read WWE’s October 30 recap
The kisses on Raw
The storyline turned openly romantic on television. WWE’s archive identifies a Cena–AJ kiss on November 19, 2012, and another on November 26 after Cena defeated Dolph Ziggler. WWE’s November 28 recap says they had kissed on Raw two weeks in a row and notes that Cena apologized on Twitter the following Tuesday. These were on-screen beats in the angle, not proof of an off-screen relationship. November 19 segment · November 26 segment · WWE’s November 28 recap

How did the storyline end?
At TLC on December 16, 2012, AJ betrayed Cena. WWE’s archive identifies the moment as AJ betraying him while dressed in his gear. It was the plot’s reversal: the apparent romance gave way to a betrayal, rather than resolving into a real-world couple. Watch WWE’s archived TLC 2012 segment
Why the angle felt especially strange
AJ had already been involved in a volatile romantic storyline before Cena. At Raw’s 1,000th episode in July 2012, WWE described AJ and Daniel Bryan celebrating their “tumultuous love affair” with an in-story wedding. The Cena plot then moved from a workplace scandal to purported surveillance, public kisses, and a betrayal at a major event. That rapid shift in tone is what makes the arc stand out as an unusually tangled WWE relationship story. WWE’s announcement about Raw’s 1,000th episode
