John Forté, the Grammy-nominated musician known for his work with the Fugees and Refugee Camp All-Stars, was found dead at his home in Chilmark, Massachusetts, on January 12, 2026. He was 50. The initial police account said there was no apparent cause and no suspected foul play; in April, the Vineyard Gazette reported that the Massachusetts medical examiner determined complications from influenza A caused his death, with seizure disorder as a contributing condition.
When and where was John Forté found?
Forté was found dead at his home in Chilmark, on Martha’s Vineyard, on January 12, 2026. The Associated Press reported his age and career context the following day, attributing the initial account to police. The Vineyard Gazette also reported the police response and the absence of an immediate determination of cause.

How did John Forté die?
In its April 27, 2026, report, the Vineyard Gazette said the Massachusetts medical examiner determined that Forté died from complications of influenza A, with seizure disorder listed as a contributing condition. That later determination updated the initial January reports, which said the cause was not immediately apparent and that foul play was not suspected. The medical examiner’s primary record was not included in the Gazette’s report.
Who was John Forté?
Forté was a rapper, recording artist, multi-instrumentalist and producer. He was associated with the Fugees and the Refugee Camp All-Stars, and contributed to the Fugees’ The Score and Wyclef Jean’s The Carnival. He also released solo albums including Poly Sci and I John.

His musical and personal life was closely connected to Martha’s Vineyard. He frequently collaborated with Carly Simon and performed locally; Ben Taylor was also a friend and musical collaborator. In a statement to the Vineyard Gazette, Taylor recalled that Forté made him feel heard, whether they were discussing philosophy, learning a song or talking about political change.
