John Cena told the live audience at WWE’s Extreme Rules event that Osama bin Laden had been killed after the show ended on May 1, 2011. WWE’s retrospective says Cena had just won the WWE Championship, heard the news from a cameraman, checked it with people at ringside and then addressed the crowd. The phrase “a decade ago” reflects the story’s 2021 anniversary framing; the announcement was more than fifteen years ago as of 2026.
When and where did Cena make the announcement?
Cena spoke to the audience after Extreme Rules on May 1, 2011, at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, according to WWE’s 2012 retrospective. It happened after the event, not during the televised match.
What happened before he addressed the crowd?
WWE says Cena had just won the WWE Championship in a triple-threat steel-cage match when a cameraman whispered the news to him. Cena recalled wanting to verify it before telling the audience:
“I actually found out when a cameraman whispered it to me,” Cena recalled. “I wanted to tell people and I remember running around to other cameramen and the guys at ringside trying to confirm it. The last thing I wanted to do was announce something that didn’t happen.”

After checking with others, Cena told the arena audience. WWE’s account describes cheers and “U.S.A.” chants afterward; its feature on WWE’s patriotic moments also identifies the announcement and audience response.

“The only thing I felt in that moment was the need to tell everyone in the arena, because as an American it was the right thing to do,” Cena explained. “I realize a lot of people heard it for the first time from me, but I’d like to think that if anyone had been in my shoes, they would have done the same exact thing.”
WWE’s separate feature characterizes his announcement as saying bin Laden’s reign had been “compromised to a permanent end.” That is WWE’s account of Cena’s wording, not the wording of President Barack Obama’s televised statement.

How did the announcement relate to President Obama’s address?
On May 1, 2011, Obama announced that the United States had conducted an operation that killed bin Laden. CNN’s contemporaneous transcript marks the broadcast at 23:02 ET and records Obama saying: “Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children.” CNN labels the transcript a rush transcript and cautions that it may not be final.
The accounts describe distinct moments: Obama’s televised confirmation and Cena’s later announcement to the Extreme Rules audience. The available sources establish that Cena told the arena crowd; they do not establish that he made the first public announcement.

Why does the title say “a decade ago”?
The wording fits the tenth anniversary in 2021, not the current date. The event took place on May 1, 2011, so in 2026 the accurate relative description is “more than fifteen years ago.” WWE published its retrospective on April 30, 2012, just under a year after the event.
