A career beyond Taggart
The AP described Ashton’s acting career as spanning more than 50 years. Among his other credits were Midnight Run, Little Big League, and Gone Baby Gone. His work in Midnight Run offered a different showcase from the familiar detective role: in a July interview with Collider, Ashton recalled auditioning opposite Robert De Niro by refusing to back down when De Niro challenged him with a match-throwing stunt. Ashton said De Niro wanted an actor who would stand up to him.
