Jimmy Kimmel Live! is not still suspended: ABC brought it back on September 23, 2025, and Nexstar and Sinclair affiliates resumed airing it three days later. The 2025 preemption nevertheless raised censorship concerns because FCC Chair Brendan Carr publicly discussed suspension before ABC took the program off the air. That sequence is central to the controversy, but it does not by itself establish that the government legally censored Kimmel.
Why was Jimmy Kimmel suspended?
ABC preempted Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely in September 2025 after Kimmel’s monologue about reactions to the killing of Charlie Kirk. The decision followed public comments from FCC Chair Brendan Carr calling for suspension and discussing possible FCC remedies. The timing made the role of government pressure a central question, though the available reporting does not settle legal causation.

Disney, ABC’s parent company, said it suspended the program “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.” Disney also described some of Kimmel’s comments as “ill-timed and thus insensitive.” Those statements give the company’s stated rationale; they do not establish whether regulatory pressure did or did not affect its decision. CBS News reported Disney’s return announcement and explanation.
Why did the suspension raise censorship fears?
The concern arose from the sequence of events: Carr spoke publicly about suspension before ABC announced its preemption. Critics interpreted the timing as government pressure on speech. FCC Democratic Commissioner Anna M. Gomez, responding to the show’s reinstatement on September 22, 2025, said: “It will continue to be up to us as citizens to push back against this Administration’s growing campaign of censorship and control.” That is Gomez’s criticism, not a court finding that the government legally censored Kimmel. Gomez’s statement is published by the FCC.

It is useful to keep the sequence, the company explanations and the criticism distinct. Carr’s public comments preceded ABC’s decision; Disney cited its own concerns about the moment and Kimmel’s comments; critics said the government’s involvement threatened free expression. The sources cited here do not resolve whether government action legally caused the suspension.
When did the show return to television?
ABC brought it back on September 23
Disney announced on September 22, 2025, that the show would return the following day after conversations with Kimmel. The ABC preemption was therefore temporary, rather than an ongoing suspension. ABC announced the return.
Some local stations kept preempting it briefly
The return on ABC did not immediately end the blackout everywhere. Nexstar said on September 23 that its ABC-affiliated stations would continue preempting the program while it monitored the show’s return. It said it would await assurance of “a commitment to fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue in the markets we serve.” Nexstar’s statement gives its position.
The Associated Press reported that Nexstar and Sinclair restored the show to their local stations on September 26, ending a blackout that had lasted just over a week. AP counted 28 Nexstar ABC affiliates and 38 Sinclair local markets. Those are reported station and market counts, not estimates of viewers or households. The Associated Press reported the local-station returns.

Did the FCC force ABC to suspend Kimmel?
The cited reporting establishes that Carr publicly called for suspension before ABC acted, and that critics viewed the sequence as censorship. It does not establish a legal finding that the FCC ordered ABC to suspend the show or that the government legally caused the decision. Disney and Nexstar gave their own stated explanations, but those explanations alone do not answer the question of regulatory influence.
What is the separate 2026 FCC dispute?
A later dispute should not be confused with the 2025 suspension. In a September 10, 2026, report, the Associated Press said Kimmel stated that an interview with Texas Democratic candidate James Talarico would appear on YouTube rather than television after what Kimmel characterized as FCC threats. AP reported that the FCC did not immediately respond. The report also described a dispute over equal-time guidance: the rule traditionally had not been applied to talk shows, while the administration had announced in January that late-night and daytime hosts had to follow it. These are reported developments and Kimmel’s characterization, not an agency finding or legal ruling about the 2025 suspension. The Associated Press reported on the 2026 dispute.
