The record was for Kimmel’s most-viewed YouTube monologue, not for the most-viewed video on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! channel overall. The Guardian reported the monologue record, while Variety made the distinction between Kimmel’s monologues and the channel’s all-time video leaders.
That scope matters: “a YouTube record” can sound broader than the claim the reports actually supported. The record concerned Kimmel’s monologues on YouTube, not every video hosted by the show’s channel.
How many views did the monologue get?
There is no single figure that covers every platform and moment. The reported totals were snapshots taken at different times, and they count different things:

The numbers are not contradictory: they differ by platform scope and reporting time. They are views, not a deduplicated count of individual people, and the dated reports do not establish the monologue’s current live YouTube counter.
How did the online numbers compare with the TV audience?
ABC/Disney reported 6.26 million viewers for the September 23 return episode in its initial Live+Same Day broadcast measurement. That figure counts broadcast viewing and excludes streaming; it is not directly comparable with online video views. ABC/Disney’s announcement and the Associated Press report identify the different measurement scopes.

Some ABC affiliates continued to preempt the program when it returned. AP reported that stations represented by Nexstar and Sinclair—nearly one quarter of ABC affiliates—were among those preempting it. That is an affiliate share, not a claim that a quarter of viewers were unable to watch; local broadcast availability varied.
