Joan Baez’s satirical poem “Little Green Worm: A Note to the President” imagines a worm moving through Donald Trump’s brain, using that absurd journey to mock what the poem portrays as a lack of empathy and impulse control. The poem’s anatomy is a metaphor, not a medical assessment.
What is “Little Green Worm: A Note to the President” about?
Baez’s poem, reproduced by Reader Supported News under her name and dated October 24, 2025, addresses the president through the image of a “little green worm.” Its voice follows the imaginary creature through parts of the brain, turning the route into a sequence of barbed observations about how a person understands others, restrains impulses and behaves socially.
The poem defines empathy in its own words: “Empathy is the ability to understand, feel, and share the emotions of another person.” It adds that empathy is “like a muscle” that can be developed with practice. These are lines in Baez’s poem, not a clinical definition or a finding about Trump.
What does the little green worm represent?
The worm is the poem’s central satirical device. As it moves through the imagined brain, the poem associates the anterior insular cortex with empathy, the prefrontal cortex with impulse control and social behavior, and the cerebrum with intelligence. The journey ends in a blunt insult. Those associations express the poem’s argument and tone; they do not establish anything about Trump’s brain or health.

The Independent reported that the opening image alludes to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s 2024 account that a worm ate part of his brain. That is the outlet’s explanation of the reference, not an indication that Baez is describing a real condition in Trump. The Independent’s October 24 report also says Rolling Stone shared the poem.
Which public remarks does the poem invoke?
Baez’s text invokes several remarks as examples of speech it presents as unfiltered, including “Grab her by the pussy,” “Shithole countries,” and a comment about shooting someone on Fifth Avenue without losing voters. They appear here as references within the poem; the poem reproduction does not provide a full account of the original contexts.

The Independent identifies Baez’s poetry collection as When You See My Mother, Ask Her to Dance, published in 2024. Its report does not establish that “Little Green Worm: A Note to the President” appears in that collection, so the poem’s reported sharing and the book should be treated as separate facts.
