Its 15 selections are a guided tour of their work—not an objective ranking of their biggest or best songs. The reproduced list ranges from early Minneapolis-connected records to later pop and R&B, with Janet Jackson central but far from the only artist represented.
What the 15-song feature is—and isn’t
Steve Appleford’s Rolling Stone feature, published October 9, 2015, uses an interview format: Jam and Lewis discuss songs that illuminate their path as musicians, songwriters and producers. The framing matters. “Our Life in 15 Songs” presents a personal career retrospective, not a chart-ranked countdown or a definitive list of the duo’s greatest hits. Read the Rolling Stone feature.
The original article is the authority for its wording, order and credits. The song sequence below follows an available reproduction of the feature, so treat it as a working guide rather than a verified transcription. The Prince.org reproduction provides the list and interview context.
The 15 songs in the available reproduction
- The Time, “Get It Up”
- S.O.S. Band, “Just Be Good to Me”
- Janet Jackson, “What Have You Done for Me Lately”
- Janet Jackson, “When I Think of You”
- Human League, “Human”
- New Edition, “Can You Stand the Rain”
- Janet Jackson, “Rhythm Nation”
- Sounds of Blackness, “Optimistic”
- Janet Jackson, “That’s the Way Love Goes”
- Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, “Scream”
- Janet Jackson featuring Q-Tip, “Got ’Til It’s Gone”
- Yolanda Adams, “Open My Heart”
- Mary J. Blige, “No More Drama”
- Usher, “U Remind Me”
- Janet Jackson, “No Sleeep”
The spread of artists is part of the point: the list moves among The Time, S.O.S. Band, Human League, New Edition, Sounds of Blackness, Michael and Janet Jackson, Yolanda Adams, Mary J. Blige and Usher, alongside several Janet Jackson tracks. It traces a working life across acts and musical settings rather than presenting one artist’s album-by-album story.

Why the selections tell a broader story
From Minneapolis roots to a wider audience
Jam and Lewis’s partnership grew out of Minneapolis’s Flyte Tyme scene. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame profile traces their early musical paths and collaboration, placing the duo’s later cross-artist success in that local foundation. The Hall of Fame profile reports 16 Billboard Hot 100 number-one hits and 27 R&B number-one hits; those are the profile’s published career totals, not a new independent count.
Pop craft with a social point of view
“Rhythm Nation” is a particularly clear example of how their work could join dance-pop energy to social subject matter. The Library of Congress describes Rhythm Nation 1814 as a Jam-and-Lewis-produced album addressing themes including racism, poverty and substance abuse. The Library of Congress account offers context for the album’s place in American recording history.

In a statement attributed to him in the Rolling Stone feature and reproduced in a 2022 scholarly article, Jimmy Jam described the collision of music videos and news coverage as part of the idea: “Watching music videos on one side and watching atrocities on the other. Somehow they all merged together. The idea for ‘rhythm nation’ was you can dance, but we can also do something more intelligent.” The remark captures the balance the song sought: a record built to move people while asking them to think. The Musical Quarterly article cites the interview and reproduces the statement.
Different songs, different roles
It would be misleading to describe all 15 tracks as written and produced by Jam and Lewis. Their contributions varied across the catalog. In the feature’s account, for example, they produced Usher’s “U Remind Me” but did not write it. The selections are therefore useful not just as a list of hits, but as a reminder that their careers included distinct kinds of collaboration and creative contribution.

How to listen to the list
Rather than treating the sequence as a ranking, listen for the changing circumstances around the records: the artist at the center, the genre and era, and whether Jam and Lewis are discussing writing, performance, production or some combination. Compare Janet Jackson’s socially minded “Rhythm Nation” with the more intimate setting of “That’s the Way Love Goes,” or set their work with New Edition and S.O.S. Band beside later collaborations with Mary J. Blige and Usher. The value of the feature is the career arc those contrasts reveal.
