Professor Proton’s death is the catalyst for grief in The Big Bang Theory Season 7, Episode 22, “The Proton Transmogrification.” Sheldon initially insists he is fine and skips the funeral; Leonard attends and reflects on mortality. The contrast is between the characters—not evidence that actors Jim Parsons and Bob Newhart had opposite real-life reactions to a death.

Why does Sheldon skip Professor Proton’s funeral?
Sheldon says he is fine and chooses not to attend because the funeral conflicts with Star Wars Day. His matter-of-fact explanation and attempt to stick to his plans make his grief look absent at first. But the episode’s creator and executive producer, Steve Molaro, described Proton as “a father figure to Sheldon, so it’s a huge loss,” and said the story gave Sheldon a chance to deal with grief. TV Guide’s May 1, 2014 interview with Molaro explains the intended emotional stakes.
How does Sheldon react to Professor Proton’s death?
Sheldon’s feelings emerge through a dream in which Professor Proton appears as an Obi-Wan-like mentor. The encounter gives Sheldon a way to confront what he has been avoiding: Proton’s death has affected him. Proton’s advice helps Sheldon reconnect with Leonard, making the dream part of Sheldon’s grief process rather than a literal return.

The Television Academy’s 2014 Emmy ballot summarizes Newhart’s role in the episode this way: “Professor Proton helps Sheldon cope with grief.” The ballot lists Newhart as Arthur in the episode, independently identifying grief as the story’s premise.
How is Leonard’s response different?
Leonard goes to the funeral with Penny. Instead of denying the loss, he reflects on mortality and the things he regrets. The episode sets his visible contemplation against Sheldon’s initial effort to carry on as usual.
Rank #2
| Story beat | Sheldon | Leonard |
|---|---|---|
| Initial response | Says he is fine and tries to continue with his plans. | Attends the funeral and considers mortality and regret. |
| Funeral | Skips it because it conflicts with Star Wars Day. | Goes with Penny. |
| Later response | Acknowledges the loss in a dream and reconnects with Leonard. | His reflection on the funeral shapes his response to the loss. |
Did Jim Parsons and Bob Newhart have opposite real-life reactions?
The episode establishes different reactions for Sheldon and Leonard, not an opposite emotional response by Parsons and Newhart to Professor Proton’s death. The death belongs to the fictional story. A later account of Parsons recalling Newhart becoming emotional describes Newhart’s standing ovation at his first live-audience appearance on the show—a welcome from the audience, not a reaction to the character’s death. CinemaBlend’s account concerns that audience moment, so it should not be treated as evidence about the actors’ feelings over the storyline.
Newhart later won his first Primetime Emmy in 2013 after seven nominations, according to CBS News. That award history is separate from the grief plot in this 2014 episode.
