The interview most directly tied to that phrase was recorded for the documentary in early 2017. It was not established as Carrey’s “final interview.”
Which interview does “off the map” refer to?
It refers most plausibly to Carrey’s interview with director Chris Smith for Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, a documentary about Carrey’s immersive performance as comedian Andy Kaufman in the 1999 film Man on the Moon. KSL’s Associated Press report quoted Smith describing Carrey as having “come back from a period of being off the map.” That was Smith’s characterization, not a documented account of when or for how long Carrey had been absent from public life. Vanity Fair reported that Smith interviewed Carrey at his Los Angeles home at the beginning of 2017, over two days. The documentary draws substantially on behind-the-scenes footage from the four-month production of Man on the Moon, alongside the newer conversation. Vanity Fair
What did Carrey discuss with Chris Smith?
The conversation connected Carrey’s experience playing Kaufman with questions of career, identity, fame, and the self. Smith described the interview as unusually open. KSL quoted him saying, “I think he had come back from a period of being off the map and I think he had a lot to say.” His phrase explains the headline’s wording; it should not be recast as Carrey’s own description or as proof that he had stopped giving interviews.

Carrey also offered a short reflection reported by KSL: “Sadness is just weather now.” The line is a personal, metaphorical remark. It does not establish a diagnosis or provide evidence for claims about his mental health.
Was this Carrey’s final interview?
The sources cited here do not establish that the conversation with Smith was Carrey’s final interview. The phrase “final interview” in the headline goes beyond what those reports verify.

There was another distinct Carrey conversation in 2017: at the Toronto International Film Festival, journalist Sharon Waxman interviewed him about Jim & Andy. TheWrap published its account on September 11, after Carrey’s New York Fashion Week remarks about identity had gone viral. TheWrap quoted Smith saying, “I just asked him one question at the beginning of the interview and just let him talk for four hours.” That description concerns Smith’s documentary interview, not the separate TIFF conversation. TheWrap
The Washington Post reported in November 2017 that Carrey had declined its own interview request. That does not establish that he had no later interviews, or that any one conversation was his last. The Washington Post

What did Carrey mean by saying there is no “me”?
In TheWrap’s account of the TIFF interview, Carrey framed identity and fame in philosophical terms. He said, “I believe I got famous so I could let go of fame, and it’s still happening, but not with me.” The remark reflects his way of talking about the constructed nature of self and celebrity; it should be read as a philosophical statement, not a clinical claim.

- “Off the map”: Chris Smith’s description of Carrey before the documentary interview, not a verified chronology.
- “Final interview”: not established by the reporting cited here.
- “Keep composure”: the cited reports do not document a claim that Carrey maintained composure throughout the interview.
- The relevant conversations: Smith’s early-2017 interview for Jim & Andy and Carrey’s separate TIFF conversation with Sharon Waxman later that year.
Vanity Fair reported at the time that Jim & Andy was scheduled to launch on Netflix on November 17, 2017. That historical announcement does not confirm the documentary’s current streaming availability.
