Jim Carrey joked that money was one reason he returned for Sonic the Hedgehog 3—alongside the chance to play a genius. He made the remark at the film’s London premiere on December 10, 2024, while answering a question about his earlier comments on retirement.
What Jim Carrey said about returning for Sonic 3
An interviewer asked Carrey about his earlier suggestion that he might return to acting for a script “written in gold ink by angels.” Carrey replied, “That might have been hyperbole,” then gave two reasons for coming back: “First of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch,” and, “I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly.” The Los Angeles Times account of his AP Entertainment interview reports that he was laughing during the exchange.
Was he serious about needing the money?
The line was delivered jokingly as part of an answer about why he returned to the franchise. It is not evidence that Carrey was in financial distress, and it does not establish his personal finances or what he was paid for the film. No reliable figure for either his compensation or personal wealth is established by the available reporting.
How the joke relates to his retirement comments
In 2022, Carrey said he was “fairly serious” about retiring and had “done enough,” while leaving open the possibility of returning for a script that felt especially important. His 2024 response revisited that public statement; it was not a detailed explanation of his finances or a broad announcement about his future plans.
