Ken Jennings is Jeopardy!’s longest-reigning champion: he won 74 consecutive games in 2004, earning $2,520,700 during that run. He later won the 2020 Greatest of All Time tournament. “Biggest winner,” however, depends on the record: Jennings holds the streak mark, but published tournament-inclusive career totals do not establish him as the all-time cash leader.
What “biggest winner” means on Jeopardy!
Jeopardy! records measure different kinds of achievement. Jennings’s defining record is the 74-game consecutive winning streak, not an uncontested claim to the highest lifetime total of tournament-inclusive winnings.

How Ken Jennings set the 74-game record
Jennings’s run took place in 2004. His official biography says he had auditioned successfully and was then working as a software engineer for a Salt Lake City health-care staffing company. It describes his preparation as a month of studying with flash cards and familiar Jeopardy! subject areas; those details are Jennings’s own biographical account. About Ken
He won $2,520,700 across those 74 games. That figure is the money from the original streak, not his later tournament prizes or lifetime total. The run ended on the November 30 show; Jennings’s biography says he lost after failing to know enough trivia about H&R Block. Jeopardy.com’s streak retrospective · Jennings’s biography

The streak’s length is also what separates his achievement from other kinds of Jeopardy! records. The Television Academy’s 2024 retrospective notes that Jennings had 64 runaway games before Final Jeopardy during the streak, but that statistic is distinct from both the 74-win record and his cash totals. His later tournaments and the GOAT title
Jennings returned for special competitions after his original run. Jeopardy.com’s cast biography lists the Ultimate Tournament of Champions in 2005, the IBM Challenge in 2011, Battle of the Decades in 2014, and the All-Star Games in 2019. Ken Jennings cast biography

In January 2020, he competed against Brad Rutter and James Holzhauer in Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time and won the tournament’s $1 million prize. Jeopardy.com called him “The Greatest of All Time” after the victory. The title refers to that tournament, not a claim that he holds every Jeopardy! record. Jeopardy.com’s January 14, 2020 report
In that report, host Alex Trebek praised Jennings’s calm delivery, knowledge, betting tactics, and signaling-in ability. The tournament report presents that as Trebek’s assessment of Jennings’s performance in the event. Jeopardy.com
