Jesse Ventura condemned President Donald Trump and federal immigration enforcement after Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. In comments reported during a visit to Roosevelt High School, Ventura called Trump a “draft-dodging coward” and said the shooting “did not have to happen.” His remarks were political criticism, not an official finding about the disputed encounter.
What Ventura said about the shooting and Trump
FOX 9 published a video report on January 8, 2026, about Ventura’s response to the Minneapolis ICE shooting. Follow-up coverage appeared the next day. Mediaite reported that Ventura spoke with FOX 9 while visiting Roosevelt High School, his alma mater.
Ventura described the death as a tragedy, saying, “Anytime you have the loss of life that needlessly happens, that’s a tragedy.” He also said, “What occurred yesterday did not have to happen.” The Daily Beast and Mediaite reported his sharpest criticism of Trump: “He’s a draft-dodging coward.” These are Ventura’s characterizations and opinions.
On constitutional limits and arrests, Mediaite quoted Ventura saying, “Freedom is not arresting people without warrants. We have a system here, it’s called a Constitution.” The available coverage provides excerpts rather than a verified full transcript; FOX 9’s original video report is the source to consult for the interview in full.

What is established about Renee Nicole Good’s death
Good was fatally shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. Public accounts of the encounter were disputed. The Associated Press reported that the Trump administration characterized the officer’s actions as self-defense. AP also said video described in its coverage contradicted Trump’s assertion that Good “viciously ran over” the officer. Neither Ventura’s reaction nor a political statement settles the factual or legal questions surrounding the shooting.
A September 15, 2026 entry in the Congressional Record includes allegations made by a House member about the administration’s response and reproduces Trump’s January 7 social-media statement. Those are attributed remarks in the record, not an independent judicial or investigative finding.

Why Roosevelt High School was part of the coverage
Reports connected Ventura’s visit to Roosevelt High School with a confrontation involving ICE officers and school staff. The available coverage does not fully establish the incident’s chronology or independently resolve its details, so it should not be treated as a settled account. The clearly reported context is that Ventura was visiting his alma mater when he spoke to FOX 9.

Mediaite reported that Ventura alluded to possibly seeking a second term as Minnesota governor. That was a suggestion about a potential political return, not confirmation that he had launched a campaign or made a formal candidacy announcement.
