In April 2024, Jerry Seinfeld blamed “the extreme left and PC crap” for what he saw as the disappearance of funny television. By October, he said that claim was not true and that he was taking it back. His remarks were an opinion about television comedy, not evidence that political correctness had caused a measurable decline—and he acknowledged he had not personally experienced the script-review process he criticized.
What Seinfeld said about comedy on television
In an interview with David Remnick for The New Yorker Radio Hour, published April 26, 2024, Seinfeld recalled an era when viewers could expect to find familiar sitcoms such as Cheers, M*A*S*H*, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and All in the Family. He wondered where that kind of funny television had gone.

He offered a blunt explanation: “This is the result of the extreme left and PC crap, and people worrying so much about offending other people.” The comment was about television comedy and how scripts are developed, rather than a claim about stand-up comedy as a whole. His criticism of script review—and its limit
Seinfeld contrasted stand-up, where a comic can get an immediate response from an audience, with television scripts that pass through multiple people, committees or groups. He suggested that concern about offense could affect what makes it through that process.

But when Remnick asked whether Seinfeld had personally experienced that kind of script review, Seinfeld answered, “Um, no.” The interview therefore records a general explanation he proposed, not a firsthand account of a particular script being censored.
Seinfeld later withdrew the claim
In October 2024, Seinfeld revisited his assertion that the extreme left had suppressed comedy during an appearance on Tom Papa’s Breaking Bread. “I did say that. That’s not true. It’s not true,” he said, adding, “I’m taking that back now officially.” He described comedy as adapting to the culture. The Guardian reported his reversal on October 15, 2024.

The reversal changes how his April remarks should be understood: Seinfeld did make the criticism, but later rejected its broad causal claim. It does not mean he withdrew the observation that television comedy felt different to him.
How others responded to the “PC crap” remarks
In June 2024, Seinfeld’s former Seinfeld co-star Julia Louis-Dreyfus offered a different view, saying attentiveness to people’s sensitivities is not inherently bad. The Guardian reported her response.

A Guardian opinion article published April 29, 2024, also challenged Seinfeld’s explanation. These are contributions to a debate, not proof of what caused any industry-wide change. Read the opinion article.

No. The cited interviews and commentary establish what Seinfeld and others said; they do not demonstrate that political correctness caused a decline in television comedy. They provide no measured change in the amount of comedy produced, audience demand or the effect of script review.

The clearest account is narrower: Seinfeld perceived a loss of the kind of sitcom comedy he remembered, initially blamed concern about offending people and script review, admitted he had not personally encountered that review process, and later said his claim that the extreme left had suppressed comedy was untrue.
