Entertainment coverage linked its themes to her divorce from Ben Affleck, but the available reporting does not establish that Lopez confirmed Affleck as the song’s subject.
What Lopez reportedly said about “Wreckage of You”
ELLE reported that Lopez sang six songs at the listening party, including “Wreckage of You.” The magazine relayed an account from attendee Edgardo Luis Rivera, who told Us Weekly that Lopez had recently co-written and recorded the pop ballad and described wanting to write about emerging stronger from a difficult situation. That is an attendee’s secondhand account, not a direct transcript or official statement from Lopez. ELLE’s report characterized the song as apparently inspired by the divorce; it did not establish an official confirmation from Lopez that Affleck is its subject.
The word “wreckage” should be understood as part of the song’s framing, not as evidence about what caused the divorce or what happened privately between the former couple. The reporting cited here does not provide those details.
How the song fits the divorce timeline
Lopez and Affleck began dating in 2002, ended their engagement in 2004, reunited in 2021, and married in 2022. Lopez filed for divorce in August 2024, and the divorce was finalized in January 2025, according to ABC News.

In May 2025, while preparing to return to touring, Lopez spoke with EL PAÍS about a difficult previous year and mentioned reading, introspection, meditation, prayer, therapy, and strengthening her family. She did not name Affleck in that interview. Speaking about songs she had been working on, she said in Spanish: “Tengo unas cuantas canciones en las que he estado trabajando que seguramente estrene pronto. Y serán muy indicativas de cómo me siento, que es básicamente libre.” EL PAÍS translated this as: “I have a few songs I’ve been working on that I’ll probably release soon. And they’ll be very indicative of how I feel, which is basically free.” Read the EL PAÍS interview.
What Lopez and Affleck have said publicly about the split
In September 2025, Lopez described the divorce as a turning point. ABC News quoted her saying, “Because it changed me,” and that it helped her grow and become more self-aware. The outlet also quoted her calling the breakup “the best thing that ever happened to me.” These are her public reflections on the experience; they do not identify the precise subject of “Wreckage of You.”

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the song’s reported connection is not confirmation
Lopez’s reported comments about writing through a difficult situation, the timing after the divorce, and the “wreckage” metaphor make the connection understandable. But those elements are not the same as Lopez naming Affleck or officially explaining the song’s subject. The careful distinction is that coverage interpreted the ballad as connected to the divorce; the available reporting does not confirm that interpretation as Lopez’s own statement.

Lopez’s earlier album-and-film project This Is Me… Now drew on her public romantic history and rekindled relationship with Affleck, as the Associated Press noted in its 2024 review. That context helps explain why audiences may read a new song through the couple’s public story, but it does not prove what “Wreckage of You” is about. Read the AP review.
