In a GQ tattoo-tour video released March 12, 2024, Jelly Roll said he regrets “98%” of his tattoos—then corrected himself to “97 percent, almost all of them.” The numbers were his informal estimate, not a count. He said many tattoos reflect beliefs he held when he was 17, rather than who he is now, but he also identified a large cross as deeply meaningful and said he would still get tattoos.
Why Jelly Roll says he regrets most of his tattoos
Jelly Roll discussed his tattoos in GQ’s Tattoo Tour, released March 12, 2024. He put his regret at “98%” before revising that to “97 percent,” emphasizing that he regretted almost all of them. ABC News summarized his estimate as between 97% and 98% in its March 15, 2024 recap.
His explanation was a change in perspective. He told GQ that many tattoos represent “who I was,” not “who I am.” He contrasted the philosophies he held at 17 with his outlook at 40. The percentage was a colorful personal estimate, not a measured tally of each tattoo.
Which tattoos did he call out?
The misspelled phrase he covered
One tattoo read “Surviving the sruggle”—with “struggle” misspelled. He said he covered the lettering with a Nashville skyline. ABC News also recounted the misspelling and cover-up.

The baby smoking a blunt
He called a tattoo depicting a baby smoking a blunt “a little excessive” and “a little bit much.” It was one of the designs he singled out as an example of a choice he later questioned.
The large cross he still values
Regretting nearly all his tattoos did not mean he rejected every one. He described a large cross as among his most meaningful, saying it represented change and a new beginning.

“Music Man” and its personal reference
He said the “Music Man” tattoo on his forehead was inspired by his wife Bunnie XO’s “Married a music man” tattoo, which refers to Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer.”
Would Jelly Roll get tattoos again?
Yes. Despite saying he regrets most of his existing tattoos, he told GQ, “I tell people I regret my tattoos, but I would not not get tattoos.” He said his current tattooing is limited to cover-ups or tour tattoos. His comments point to a distinction between regretting particular designs and rejecting tattooing altogether.

His advice for choosing a first tattoo
Jelly Roll’s advice was to consider the artist as carefully as the design: “Don’t just think about what you’re tattooing on your body, think about who is tattooing on your body.” ABC News quoted the same advice in its recap. The point is practical: the artist is responsible for translating an idea into permanent work, so the person’s skill and suitability matter alongside the image or words being chosen.
His estimate is not the same as a national survey
Jelly Roll’s 97%–98% figure describes his own informal estimate. It should not be read as a typical regret rate. In an Associated Press report published in December 2025, Pew Research Center survey data from 2023 showed that 32% of U.S. adults surveyed had tattoos and 24% said they regretted getting tattoos. Those are separate population figures, not a comparison with Jelly Roll’s personal estimate.

The AP report also notes that tattoo removal may require eight to 12 treatments or more and can be painful and costly. Risks attributed to the FDA include lighter skin, temporary scarring, infection, redness, or soreness. That general context does not indicate that Jelly Roll is removing his tattoos; his GQ interview described cover-ups and tour tattoos, not a removal plan.

The interview establishes what Jelly Roll said in March 2024. It does not establish whether his views have changed since then. In that interview, he described regret tied to his changing identity, named tattoos he disliked or valued, and said he would still get tattoos.
