Jelly Roll performed “I Am Not Okay” during the In Memoriam segment at the 76th Emmy Awards, held at Los Angeles’s Peacock Theater and broadcast live on ABC. The Television Academy announced the performance as part of the ceremony’s remembrance of television figures who had died.

Before singing, Jelly Roll described music and storytelling as therapeutic and cathartic. He said he hoped the song could offer “a healing moment for those mourning the storytellers we have lost this year,” adding, “If you are feeling lost or alone tonight, I want you to know that it’s OK to not always be OK.” ABC News reported his remarks ahead of the performance.
Was James Earl Jones honored during Jelly Roll’s performance?
James Earl Jones was among the people named by ABC News as honored during the on-air In Memoriam. The broadcast’s inclusion of Jones needs to be distinguished from the date range printed in the Television Academy’s program: that formal list covered deaths from October 1, 2023, through August 26, 2024. Jones died on September 9, 2024, after that cutoff. His appearance among the broadcast honorees does not mean his death fell within the program’s stated period.

How did the Emmys remember Bob Newhart?
Bob Newhart was remembered in a distinct moment at the close of the In Memoriam segment: Jimmy Kimmel gave a special spoken tribute after the song performance. Newhart died on July 18, 2024, within the Academy program’s stated date range.

The Television Academy’s 76th Emmy program gives the In Memoriam period as October 1, 2023–August 26, 2024. The telecast aired on September 15, 2024, and contemporary coverage reported Jones among those remembered on air despite his death falling after the printed cutoff. The two records describe different things: the program’s specified date range and the broadcast’s on-screen tribute.
