He disappeared while swimming near the Mississippi River; his body was recovered from the river on June 4. He was in Memphis preparing to rehearse and record music for a follow-up to Grace.
How did Jeff Buckley die?
Buckley drowned while swimming in Memphis. His official biography and FAQ describe his death as an accidental drowning or swimming accident. The Associated Press dispatch republished on his official website reported that he disappeared while swimming and that his body was found in the Mississippi River on June 4, 1997. The official biography, the official FAQ and the AP dispatch provide those accounts.
What happened in Memphis?
Buckley was in Memphis working toward a follow-up to Grace, which his official biography identifies as My Sweetheart, The Drunk. Contemporaneous reporting said he went swimming in the harbor area while a friend was nearby. When the friend realized Buckley was missing, they contacted authorities. The Washington Post’s May 31, 1997 report covered the search; the AP dispatch carried on Buckley’s official site records that his body was recovered from the Mississippi River on June 4.
Was a passing boat’s wake responsible?
A June 7, 1997 report in The Irish Times said authorities believed the wake of a passing boat may have swept Buckley away. That is a contemporaneous reported theory, not a mechanism established here by a primary investigative record. The available accounts support describing the death as an accidental drowning, but they do not establish the precise physical sequence that led to it. The Irish Times report also quoted Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, urging people not to speculate beyond the facts.

What is known—and what should not be assumed
During the search, Guibert said, “It has become apparent to me that my son will not be walking out of the river.” The Los Angeles Times reported on June 3, 1997, that the statement had been released through Columbia Records. It reflected the family’s understanding during the search; it does not establish how the drowning occurred. The Los Angeles Times report provides the statement’s context.
The sources cited here do not include a primary police file or autopsy report. They therefore do not establish specific toxicology findings or prove the boat-wake theory as the definitive cause. Claims of suicide or foul play are not supported by the accounts cited here.
