The move itself was reported; who caused it is less certain. Reuters, citing sources, pointed to security concerns and protest risk, while activists told the Associated Press that their pressure had forced organizers to change venues. Neither account establishes a definitive cause.
What changed—and when
The venue change concerned the couple’s final celebration, not their wedding ceremony. On June 27, 2025, Bezos and Sánchez exchanged vows on San Giorgio Maggiore, according to The Washington Post. The major party planned for Saturday was reported to have moved from the Scuola Grande della Misericordia, in Cannaregio, to a hall at the Arsenale.
The chronology matters. In a March 29, 2025 note, Venice’s municipality said about 200 guests were expected and argued that the wedding could take place without disrupting the city. It also rejected reports of excessive gondola and water-taxi bookings. That was an advance statement, issued before the June protests and reported venue change—not a later assessment of what happened. Comune di Venezia
On June 24, Reuters reported that the final celebration would instead take place at the Arsenale. The Washington Post reported on June 27 that the ceremony had taken place and that the major party was planned for Saturday at a changed location.

Why did the venue move?
| Account | What it says | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Reuters sources | Reuters reported that security concerns and the risk of protests prompted the move. | A reported rationale attributed to sources; not a direct confirmation from Bezos or his representatives. Reuters, republished by Investing.com |
| Activists, as reported by AP | Campaigners said their pressure forced organizers to choose the Arsenale, which they believed would be easier to secure. | The activists’ claim about their influence, not independent proof that their action alone caused the decision. Associated Press |
| What the accounts share | The planned celebration was reported moved from the Misericordia to the Arsenale amid protest concerns. | The relocation was reported by both outlets; the sources do not provide a definitive, directly confirmed account of its cause. |
“Forced to move” is therefore best understood as activist framing, not a proven finding about who made the decision. AP reported that Bezos’s representatives had not commented on the protests. The available accounts do not include a direct statement from Bezos or his representatives confirming why the venue changed.
Why the Arsenale offered a different setting
Reuters described the Arsenale as part of a vast 14th-century complex in eastern Castello, historically a shipyard and later an exhibition space. It said the hall was more secure than the originally earmarked Misericordia venue because it is surrounded by water and can be difficult to reach by land when connecting bridges are raised. That physical setting helps explain why the venue could be viewed as easier to secure; it does not, by itself, prove what motivated the organizers.
What protesters objected to—and how officials responded
AP described a coalition of roughly a dozen Venetian organizations under the “No Space for Bezos” banner. It included housing advocates, anti-cruise-ship campaigners and university groups. Their objections connected the high-profile wedding to wider concerns about wealth inequality, mass tourism, housing and municipal priorities. AP reported that activists first planned a canal-access protest, then changed it to a march after saying they had won a venue change.
City officials defended Venice’s ability to host the event and denied that it would disrupt the city. Mayor Luigi Brugnaro told AP, “Venice once again reveals itself to be a global stage.” The municipality’s March estimate of about 200 expected guests and its assurances about disruption should be read as its pre-event position, not as proof that every concern raised by residents was unfounded.

The wedding planners, Lanza & Baucina, also described their stated approach in a June 24 statement reproduced by Vanity Fair: “From the very beginning, both our client’s instructions and our guiding principles have been very clear: minimizing the impact of the event for the city, respect for its residents and institutions, and the preeminent use of local workers in the creation of the events.” This records the planners’ position; it does not settle the dispute over the wedding’s broader effects.

How many guests attended?
The sources give estimates with different timing and scope, not an audited final count. Venice’s municipality said in March 2025 that approximately 200 guests were expected. Reuters reported in June that sources estimated 200–250 VIP guests. These figures should not be combined or treated as a confirmed attendance total, and the sources do not establish a verified economic benefit from the wedding.
Bezos, speaking in Venice, reflected on the city to The Washington Post: “It’s an impossible city,” he said. “It can’t exist and yet here it is.” The remark captures the striking setting; it does not resolve the competing accounts of why the party changed venues.
