John Amos died at age 84 on August 21, 2024. A later report by TMZ, citing a death certificate it said it obtained, identified congestive heart failure as the cause of death. The certificate itself was not independently reviewed here, so the specific cause should be understood as certificate-based reporting by TMZ.

What was John Amos’s reported cause of death?

TMZ reported on October 2, 2024, that a Los Angeles County death certificate it obtained listed congestive heart failure as the cause of Amos’s death. TMZ also reported that the certificate listed no other significant medical conditions and that Amos died at a hospital in Inglewood. Those details are attributable to TMZ’s account of the document, not to an independent review of the certificate. TMZ’s report.

Why did early reports say “natural causes”?

The first public accounts did not give the same level of detail. On October 1, 2024, the Associated Press reported that Amos had died of natural causes, while The Washington Post noted that the representative’s announcement did not specify a cause. The more specific congestive-heart-failure account appeared the next day in TMZ’s certificate-based report. Associated Press; The Washington Post.

What did Amos’s family say?

The Denver Gazette reported on October 2 that a family statement said relatives and close friends had learned of Amos’s death through media reports, had not been given a death certificate, and did not know where or why he had died. The same article attributed to the family an account that Amos had congestive heart failure and dementia. These are statements reported by the outlet and should be kept distinct from TMZ’s account of what the death certificate said. The Denver Gazette’s report.
