John Oliver mocked Donald Trump’s remarks about girls, dolls and the price effects of tariffs, objecting in particular to Trump describing an 11-year-old as a “beautiful baby girl.” The exchange connected a pointed comedy segment to a real policy debate: whether tariffs could make toys more expensive.
What did Trump say about girls and dolls?
In remarks defending his tariff policy, Trump used dolls as an example while discussing how prices might change. The Hollywood Reporter’s May 12, 2025 video description says Oliver focused on Trump’s repeated comments about how many dolls girls might have. The Independent likewise reported that Trump spoke about how many dolls “beautiful baby girls” might have.

The Daily Beast reported that Trump described an 11-year-old as a “beautiful baby girl” while discussing dolls. It also said he repeated the point to reporters aboard Air Force One, naming girls aged 9, 10 and 15 and suggesting they could be happy with a small number of dolls. Those details are attributed here to the Daily Beast’s account.
What did John Oliver say?
Oliver’s criticism centered on Trump’s language about children, not on dolls as toys. The Daily Beast attributed this line to Oliver: “Every single way this man refers to girls makes my skin want to turn inside out.” The report also quoted Oliver calling the remark “a very weird thing to say” and objecting: “Don’t call an 11-year-old that. First of all, it’s creepy”.

Trump used dolls to illustrate his defense of tariffs and the possibility that prices could rise. The tariff question is separate from Oliver’s objection to the way Trump referred to girls: one concerns the possible cost of imported toys, while the other concerns the language Oliver criticized.

The Hollywood Reporter and the Daily Beast reported that Mattel had said it would have to raise prices for Barbie and other toys. That is reported context for the segment, not an independently verified company announcement here. The coverage does not establish a specific price increase or show that tariffs had already changed the price of a particular doll.
