Jodie Foster said she turned down Princess Leia because she was already under contract for a Disney movie and did not want to leave that production. She explained the decision during a January 2024 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Why did Jodie Foster turn down Princess Leia?
Foster described a scheduling and contract conflict. “They were going for a younger Princess Leia, but I had a conflict. I was doing a Disney movie,” she told Jimmy Fallon. She added: “I just didn’t want to pull out of the Disney movie because I was already under contract. So I didn’t do it.” Fox News reported her comments on January 18, 2024.
Foster also praised the casting outcome, saying the filmmakers “did an amazing job.” She joked about how she might have looked as Leia, mentioning different hair and “a pineapple.” Her explanation was about her existing commitment, not a stated objection to the role.
Which Disney movie was she making?
Foster did not name the Disney movie in the interview account reported by Fox News. Syfy Wire identified it as Freaky Friday, while The Guardian described that identification as an almost certain inference from the timeline. It is therefore more precise to say later coverage identified the Disney film as Freaky Friday, rather than attribute that title to Foster herself.

Was Foster too young to play Leia?
Foster called the casting idea a “younger Princess Leia,” but she did not say her age was the reason she declined. The stated reason was her Disney contract. Coverage places Foster at about 13 or 14 during the relevant period: Syfy Wire gives her age as 13, while The Guardian describes her as 13 or 14 during filming. Both reports place Carrie Fisher, who ultimately played Leia in Star Wars: A New Hope, at 19.
